Hi. Typically the good Strategy people I’ve experienced start in a discipline, get good at it, understand it’s role strategically and move onto Strategy as a discipline that way. All those I’ve met who went straight in seem a little light touch.
I’m not sure this is the right move - if you have the opportunity to wait it out for a junior job in strategy (or even another internship), go for that. It will be faster and people won’t pigeonhole you as an account person.
Easiest way I think is to shift from internship to junior internally. If you have to, do another strat internship at a big agency. Meanwhile, start talking to every recruiter in your target city. Build a network by being curious and humble
Also ask to meet up with strategists and strategy directors - for advice, to ask them questions, etc. recruiters are meh but the people that would want you on their team - build a relationship
Small-mid agencies don’t have specific strategy departments. That mostly falls to the accounts people, so I’d echo the feedback of the person above me and suggest starting with Accounts.
Thank you!
