Engineering job (not computer) - $57k starting salary
First consulting firm after MBA - $140k +bonus (10-15%) this was starting base and bonus, slowly went up as I progressed to manager
Second consulting firm - $210k base + bonus (45-50%)
Over 500% increase over 15 years
Cool story C2, nice attempt at humble bragging
no attempt at being humble detected

What do you do as a program manager if you don’t mind me asking?
5 years, 4 employers. >20% bump each time
I don’t think there’s a hard and fast rule for it. I just always had an ear out and would casually apply to job that were a stretch
5 years, 3 jobs, went from $55k->90k->$160k
3Y in industry. Jumped to Consulting for 1.5Y. Bounced to a Fortune 5. $140 base 20k bonus plus 40k/yr equity (which I did not include above).
As an early promote out of undergrad, finding it hard to justify a jump from consulting. Where else will pay me $170k base with <3 YOE at age 24. So i’m sticking around
... Salesforce 😁 but I have 2 YOE
Jump. If you stay you’ll be taken for granted. The only exception is if you can show that you can bring in the money. This usually occurs if you can sell well and you know how to.
Note if you do get an offer and it’s for more, don’t take any match. I’ve known people who’ve domes this and been kicked out within 6 months or less.
Agree with this response. If you don’t see a clear path upwards and you don’t see your manager/partner helping you progress then nothing will change and you got to jump... otherwise you should expect to grow your comp with an industry average. Also sometimes there is just no growth, because your practice/tech solution/industry is simply not growing anymore.
To get super tactical here, I would evaluate where you stand and where the market is ever year. If there are better opportunities out there, don’t hesitate to jump.
Thanks, great advice
7 years in, from 65k in industry to 130k now. Negotiating with another consulting firm for 180 + bonus.
Before that I drove a cab in an Asian country while I worked an outsourced tech support role. So that salary(15k usd) is peanuts compared to what I make now.
4.5yrs, 1 hop, and 25k raise since my start of my career
Definitely
4.5 years 1 employer averaged 20% increased in pay every year. Jan 4th I start with a competitor and I jumped for almost a 50% raise in base. Focus on your skills and the money and titles will follow.
As in my soon to be ex-employer? If Yes, DM me and I will give you the name. But not everyone got that, I was the exception.

OP, what company are you at?
Thank you for the insights. Going to start looking for other opportunities soon
2 YOE, started at $58k, hopped to another company 22 months in, now on $145k.
8 years 4 employers. First 2 over 3 years, $45k to $60k. 3rd $70k to $140k in 3 years via promos. Jumped to $160k + significant variable comp now at #4 (began last month).
I will say my most recent employer (#3) was a very rewarding place to work, and enabled significant progression for me. I would’ve probably doubled my salary again in 3 years if I stayed, but making a career shift to something I enjoy more.
