What's your opinion on referring a stranger, for a job in your company

I wouldn't do it. I like to take my recommendation seriously. I've even recommended a friend but he showed not to have good character and it was a big learning moment for me. I decided I wasn't going to make a referral lightly but I was going to make sure I did my due diligence before I recommended someone.

A complete stranger? No way, I'm not putting my reputation on the line like that. Unless I have a close enough relationship with the hiring manager or supervisor to add a little disclaimer and let them know that I hardly know the person.

like

Nope, don’t sabotage your reputation

like

I wouldn’t do it for a stranger, unless I actually talked to them and could verify their reputation and experience from someone else.

like

I don't refer close friends (we need to be able to rant to each other, and have each other neutral or on our side lol)...

I also don't refer strangers....

Acquaintance, yes

The only way I would is if someone I completely trusted vouched for them. I have been lucky enough to have had a stranger be ok with me using their name as a referral because we had a mutual friend. Also, the referral bonus for her was big $ so it benefitted both of us.

I have never done that and never will. When I refer people I make sure that I know them and their competence to fill the role. I don't want to waste my time, the companies resources and my healthy connection with them.

Depends - is a friend another friend recommended? Is it to my department? Etc

Never referring a stranger, I wouldn’t refer unless I know the person has good work ethics

Definitely a risk I wouldn’t take. You don’t know what the situation might be if they come in the door and while no one will know them if they leave, the downside outweighs the positive.

Have you seen women wear ties and "masculine"-looking suits to work? Was it accepted by client and team? I've never worn a tie to work, but when I've worn clothing that had a more "masculine" fit either in grad school or some work environments, I've gotten comments and looks, or sometimes asked (or people gossiped) about my orientation. When I wear more "feminine"-looking clothing, I feel more more uncomfortable and awkward. 🤷🏼‍♀️

My ASM is lazy and is incapable of doing the easiest basic tasks with recruitment. She receives all my end of day updates, is cc’d on all emails, makes me fill out 5 repetitive excel/smart sheet, and joins all my meetings but she still wants to call having me 5x daily about updates. I’m always the one to go to if other recruiters fail to meet client deadlines and cleaning up recruiters mistakes. How do I even handle this to begin with?

He is difficult & volatile and has yet to give me a contract 1 month in. Have I agreed to a bad deal? help

Hi all,

My boss makes jokes about me being from a different country whenever there is a work meeting or a gathering with coworkers, even though he knows where I am from. This usually occurs when I meet new work-related people or for example if I am in a situation that involves ethnic related subjects.

What is this? This is normal?

Stereotyping?
Racism?

The first time I ignored that, but now it has become a pattern and is bothering me now. I am south-American working in the UK.

Last night I went over to my friends house (she has 2 kids, 2 and 4 yo). She and her husband were asking me about my pregnancy and planning. And were asking what I’ve prepped to date. I’m only 13w2 days so I think it’s way to early for buying stuff, but I did mention we hired a baby nurse for when the baby comes. My friend completely berated me, short of calling me a bad mom already, saying “what is she going to do all day? Don’t you want to bond with your child?”. I’m so upset by this.

How much stock do you put on benefits? I have two offers with stark differences in benefits. Job 1: role I want, but benefit sucks (2 weeks paternity leave, 20% coinsurance). Job 2: role is okay but higher level and great benefits (16 weeks paternity, 0% coinsurance, 5 more days of vacation). Total comp is the same though. I wonder if I should just focus on role but Job 2 is a large company, so I can move around after 2-3 years I’d expect. Thoughts?
