My industry is SaaS - My go to script is this;
I’ve been interviewing with numerous organizations with the same job title (level etc), and I’ve heard a broad range of salary bands. I’d be curious to hear what band is currently set aside for this position to see if it aligns for the both of us.
This almost always works - if they still request an answer, have them explain the role in more detail so you can align your experience with your response and ask for a beneficial increase for yourself to move.
This is a good one!
Just ask them what their budget is
“I’m uncomfortable setting a salary expectation until I know more about the position. What’s the range you had in mind?”
I just tell them my number (which is pretty high) and then that usually brings out their budget
I like to research on Glassdoor, then suggest a slightly lower number within their budget range. That way, it’s still fair, but at the lower end, which makes them more likely to consider you.
Just vaguely say something like "in line with market compensation". If they press have some numbers from other job offers / glassdoor and add a bump to that so that you can negotiate down from there. The trick is never to negotiate against yourself
I was asked this question alot lately, if I am in strong position I ask what I desire , if I am not in a strong position I ask minimum what I can accept salary to work on that position
