When you think you will get enough benefit out of paying the high annual cost.
Yeah agree with @Anthem Inc 1, as soon as the benefits outweigh the $700 yearly fee, I would say go for it. The card has pretty perks that make getting your money's worth fairly easy. Just the Uber, digital entertainment, clear and hotel credits alone put you at ~800 in benefits, not to mention points, other perks, etc.
Why not have both?
If maximizing the benefits, fees are negligible. The Gold is good for earning points on restaurants and groceries. While you earn points on travel with the Platinum.
One or two nice international trips per year makes it worthwhile, especially if you use the hotel perks.
