I JUST experienced this lol. Whatever let them have their pettyness. Not your problem anymore.
Open on: Boss comes back from vacation from Paris.
ME: Hi! Welcome back! How was Paris?
Boss (apathetic/annoyed): I mean it was Paris, you know? Paris is Paris.
Boss brushes past me.
Me: Oh ok.
White Male Copywriter rounds corner sees my boss.
White Male CW (to boss): Hey! Welcome back! How was Paris?
BOSS: Hey Mark!! It was gorgeous - the birds were singing, the light was beautiful, my wife and I had such a great time, and you wouldn’t believe the....
They round the corner chattering about travel and Paris together.
Close on me, a WOC, looking at them buddy-buddy, wondering what I did wrong.
Racism and misogyny, nepotism and favoritism are very real.
It’s not in your head. The more people tell you it is, the more they are gaslighting you.
I produced, I was a strong writer. I was eager. I was kind. I was just well... (what do you think?)
Thanks - it’s accurate Bc I only write the truth - maybe one day I’ll write these lovely memoirs down - dark comedy. Also Bc none of my non advertising friends never believe my stories.
I think Advertising and PR are rare industries where people stay in touch
That’s a very broad statement with little merit. I am connected to all of my old bosses and many old colleagues in some way shape or form. Many of who I have ended up working for again, crossed paths with again at other agencies or introduced/had me introduce to connections. Plus, these days, social media and LinkedIn make it so much easier to stay in touch and up to date on everyone’s whereabouts.
I spoke with your boss, it’s in your head,
OP can’t tell the difference in how they’re being treated now vs. before when someone they’ve arguably been closest to? Ok...
Hurt feelings, especially when they've read those stupid memes on LinkedIn that read "people don't quit bad companies, they quit bad bosses"
Maybe it’s based on how you are acting now. I just had someone resign for a much better opportunity and truly wished them well. Then, they slammed the whole agency to my boss, gave less than two weeks notice and haven’t done any work. It got tense till I decided to take the high road and be nice in spite of all this.
They probably don’t feel good about you leaving, and their emotions are ruling how they are dealing with it. They’ll either always hold it against you, or one day get over it. People are emotional creatures and some simply can’t put things aside and treat things as purely business.
I had a boss who told me I was dead to her after I resigned. Which was really no big deal (because, screw her), but it was somewhat problematic when I tried to set up time with her to transition the work to whomever she decided was my replacement.
We need a horror emoji on here
People leave jobs like they leave meetings.
Had the same happen to me. The only boss I haven’t spoken to since leaving, all the rest are mentors and friends and colleagues now.
It happens. I think they take it personally that you are leaving, and everyone deals with it differently. Not that it’s an excuse, but just ensure you don’t take it personally, and realize it’s not how you’d play it out if the roles were reversed. And move forward.
