Who are folks using for car insurance nowadays? Moving out of the city (Westchester) and will be getting a car, quotes I have gotten online seem outlandish - $350-$500.

28M - no accidents/ticket history, haven’t been insured since I sold my car in college, looking at Volvo/VW/Audi.

In NYC, Geico is usually cheapest. I have a VW SUV in the city and pay $240/month. It’s dependent on so many factors though - especially how many car related claims are made in your zip code, because that makes you a higher risk.

Curious which borough you’re in. 2 year ago, I was paying $150/month so they really keep increasing our rates constantly :(

It’s helpful to use an insurance broker because they can shop around for you and see who is the most competitive

like

Also, if you do a defensive driving course you can almost always receive a discounted rate and I believe it lasts 5 years

like

They’re all a fortune. Some people care about ratings of the insurance company which often align with price but not always. Also coverage level obviously directly impacts price so be sure to compare apples to apples.

Geico is considered average. Allstate is considered poor. USAA is considered good. There’s numerous other factors as well.

Being uninsured is why everyone will give you a high quote, shop around after 6 months of being insured and they will come down significantly also if your willing to have an semi intrusive app monitor your driving habits that can shave off another 15% usually.

While the discount is alluring I’ve heard that the data from the trackers can be used against you in a case or suit by either insurance company to avoid paying.

My dilemma… I am an injury adjuster at a carrier experiencing high inventory that’s barely manageable. A competitor offered a higher salary and manageable workload. BUT, I would like to get into underwriting. I applied for UW position w/ a different carrier and they’ve made an offer. It’s lower than my current salary and significantly lower than what I’d make by taking the first offer. Do I take the high salary and stay in claims or go for UW in hopes it will be best in long run?

My firm’s IT (especially system saving and file locating function) is so bad 😐😞 and they keep doing updates no one asked them for just to mess with the stuff we already got a hang of without doing anything about the issues we actually need fixed. Anyone else in a similar boat? Do you bill the client for the time it takes to fix the IT issue (or IT inefficiency generally, like time taken to find a file in a convoluted system)? Or is that supposed to be our non-billable time?

Foreign LLM student here. I plan to take the NY bar exam in February. I’m thinking of taking a bar prep course (most likely Barbri). They offer two options: the “traditional” course (which lasts around 2.5 months) and an extended 6-month course. The difference in price is substantial – 2.5k for the traditional course vs 6k for the extended one. Any thoughts/recommendations on which one I should take? In case it is helpful, I come from a civil law country. Thanks!
