I had a senior who was an acting manager on some of my projects when I was an associate and they were honestly better than the actual managers. The CPA is just a measure of you ability to memorize and regurgitate information at the right time. Managing requires higher level skills that will consistently be used and built upon. You have to not only know the technical work, but relationship management with clients and teams, project and workflow management skills, staying calm under preassure, coaching/mentoring/training, firm internal admin (billing, meetings, coordinating teams, etc.), and many other nuanced skills that take time to learn and apply. The CPA doesn't prepare you for any of that!
Because they’re more skilled than those that they will be supervising.
Such situations are considered on a case by case basis. I went from corporate to big-4 as a senior and became a manager and senior manager as a non-CPA. I eventually became a CAE for a financial services firm for 8 years.
I’ve worked with some dumb CPAs. That’s all I’ll say.
Manager=has the level of expertise, experience, can manage projects/resources.
CPA license=credential issued based on the exams passed.
CPA is just memorization. Not everyone has the skill or temperament to be a manager.
Truly, why not? They can still get a credential and make manager no?
We are more skilled with financial accounting and client relations. Having a CPA means you passed a test, that's all it means. A CPA does not mean knowledge and experience. Most senior accountants, like me are more qualified for manager positions than CPAs, based on knowledge and experience. However we don't want to sign off on tax returns, even if we have an EA.
That’s not all that it means. It means you’re knowledgeable in the topics of the exam, and have some basic understanding of it.
If someone is highly competent, has the right experience and can both manage and super senior my engagements…. yes, please.
Who’s requirements, yours?
Requirements for what? They are not the ones signing you genius
