It gets them noticed by recruiters in a sea of potential candidates.

I’m definitely opening the ex-McK to see what’s what. I might open the other.
There will always be people triggered by stuff like that, but they’ll be triggered by almost anything so you can’t solve for them anyway. If it gets a person noticed and hired into the job they want, good for them for not caring what a few sensitive strangers on the Internet think about it.
I personally have no plans to do it. Ex-KPMG doesn’t likely have the same impact 😂 But I understand it. To each their own.

I’m also ex-KPMG and 100% agree with this take.
One of the weirdest “equality” trends of our era is this tendency to think that individuals are *not* going to do everything legal and within their power to increase the likelihood of success for them and their families. MBB folks are not losing sleep because they cracked firms the rest of us did not.

It gets you hired by startups and weird INTL companies.
Can’t wait to put Ex-Accenture and have all the offers start rolling in!
The people turned off by it would be current consultants.
The people who get excited about it are recruiters/hiring managers with very specific criteria. You only need 1 job at a time so it could help.
Reality is most recruiters won’t even know what it means.

I do it because it's for signaling. Rarely is it useful and even more rarely is it detrimental.
Real question though: why does it bother you?
Isn’t a thoughtfully updated, clean, and detailed LinkedIn profile a signal that this person needs LinkedIn’s help getting a job? Pass.
I think the message they’re trying to convey is, “look at me! I used to work for a prestigious firm that’s hard to get into. It means I’m very good compared to other people”
Haha I love that this thread exists. Resume and linked in are a list of attractive things. MBB is attractive. QED.
Not insecure to list your positives...

It’s a flex man.
People see MBB and automatically think higher of you.

Algos and it’s pretty much the flagship of your career history. People put ex google as a qualifier kind of like saying been there done that. MBB and FAANG are really the only employers it makes sense to do it for. It signals you’re apart of that alumni club. Why do people 30 years out of undergrad still root for their football team or have branded clothing/memorabilia from that university?
May be helps with the linkedin algo or recruiter search keyword..
But wouldn’t that show up anyway from their profile?

Power move.
Like if you are dating a woman, having ex-bezos attached to your profile automatically says I could buy you and your family 1000x over.
I hate to say it, but my friend and I swiped right on the same guy because he wrote ex-Google on his profile 💀 this was when we were 21
They use it in their LinkedIn profile because they are and therefore they can. It gets them immediately noticed in a fashion ex non-MBB doesn’t.
Actually a good idea to put ex non-MBB. Atleast a visibility to recruiter even if they left swipe? 🤔
When I was still an MBA student I was cold emailing some recruiters for internships. Sent one recruiter a mail with subject “mba internship interest” - no response. Sent same recruiter “Yale MBA interested in summer internship opportunities” and immediately got a response
It’s LinkedIn, the whole point of that platform is for networking and jobs. Only people who are bothered by it, can’t put it.
This! Many people who are in their 40s still mention that they are ex mbb in casual conversation when you meet them. I think it might be insecurity but it might be trying to credentialize themselves. Or saying. I work this crappy job now that isn’t that impressive, but I used to work at mbb.
I also think that working at mbb for a couple years after business school is more of a life altering experience than what I did. Even though I worked at a pretty intense boutique firm that competed with mbb. Unfortunately it isn’t as well known as mbb so I can’t mention it with much use.
I also worked at a high end boutique. But I still mention it in circles where people may know the firm and it’s really fun when people make the connection. I think I do this for “no way, my (roommate, cousin, etc) used to work there” kind of kinship reasons.
Yes.
