Pressure from the CFO to use that office space since he/she can’t get out of their lease. 🤷♂️

They just want to keep you tied to their city and don’t care about your ability to plan for your near future. It’s all to benefit the company. Ignore that it won’t be January.
A few thoughts- this is Google focused but would extend to several of the other tech companies like Facebook, Apple, etc, who have similar variables.
Google owns a lot of their buildings versus rent. It’s a sunk cost for them regardless of if we’re there or not- they can’t get out of leases. The pure square footage they no longer have to clean, heat and air condition is probably substantial savings.
In addition Googlers have a lot of onsite perks that no longer need service- cafeterias, gyms, classes, amongst other things, that they no longer have inventory or hard costs for. Agencies don’t have these kinds of costs so to me, not as much incentive to save on these kinds of things.
Type of work, too. Google is so much tech and development that can be done remotely with more ease. Agency leaders hang a lot of their hats on their “in person collaboration” hook.
Googlers travel *a lot*. Not having travel and expenses adds up, especially for execs. In addition they’re ensuring they aren’t liable in case someone gets sick while on work travel. Likely a reason they have announced so far in advance.
It all adds up in the end. Certainly not comprehensive and open to thoughts, but those would be some initial big differences and reasonings.
Its funny you say that. Because over the past 4 years I’ve worked in ad agencies, all of the teams I’ve worked on were based out of other offices. So That basically means I had to get dressed, ride the train into the city, and take phone calls/emails all day without ever having to interact with another human in the office I was sitting.
With Global/National ad agencies, teams are becoming this weird assortment of individuals across the country to work on a project.
I’m not a big fan of the idea that we’ll return to the office in January (in the middle of flu season!) with crowded subway commutes.
GroupM signed an expensive 20 year lease in NYC. They ain’t about to say it’s okay to WFH long term.
Still devastated, loved the month I spent in that building, it’s gorgeous. Org has no plans to bring us back though.
Yes. Havas keeps doing this. Let’s just call it. It’s keeping people unnecessarily in the city.

I think it’s dumb to give ANY date. Companies should just let their employees know that they can wfh as much as they’d like, only coming into the office when necessary. Or something along those lines
I don't think it will be January. I think it will be mid 2021 when there's a widely available vaccine OR an effective treatment.
