Heck yeah. Either be blunt (being bent over in pain is a completely valid reason for a sick day, regardless of cause), or if you're more modest about it, just say you have an upset stomach.
Seconding account director 1 - this is 2017 and there are very good drugs for that. I used to be bedridden once a month.
Yep. Only when they're so terrible I don't want to move. I don't abuse taking days off just because it's the time of the month. But some months the pain on the first day is unbearable. I just say I'm not feeling well. Simple as that.
You don't owe anyone an explanation. Just say you're not feeling well, because you're not.
If you somehow haven't already, you should also talk to your gynecologist about cramp pain management, etc. Don't just suffer through it.
Like this, "*cough* I'm sick"
Go the upset stomach route and work from home if you can. No one wants to be in an office near someone with a stomach thing.
I try not to if I can help it... because otherwise I would be out at least one day every month and that won't look too good. I just take Advil. I have left home early because of it. Just said I didn't feel well. Or that I felt "funky". No questions asked.
big ole yip!
I would work from home if I had bad cramps. Not worth taking a sick day for it.
@AD1 and anyone else mentioning meds. Nope. I refuse to take anything besides Advil. But that first day SOMETIMES (not every time) is so bad that even advil doesn't touch it. And even trying to work from home is miserable. I have PMDD and it is ROUGH sometimes. I refuse to take anything hormonal, it has never helped, in fact at time hormonal things made it worse. I also can not stand turning to pharma. I deal with it by eating properly, exercising, etc. Like I said, it's not every month. I prob have to call off about 3-4 times a year for that first day.
MVS1, I was responding to OP, not you personally, and simply adding another option to consider to the discussion (which didn't even include mention of meds). All this is highly personal and individual and different things work for different people for different reasons. I don't take painkillers even for headache. My friend needs actual injection shots to get through her first period days. Nobody is telling you what to do and nobody is judging you either, not sure what's with the defensive response. At least that's how it comes off to me.
