Any Aon pension actuaries who could help my friend understand the hierarchy of titles? Let’s say my friend has 10 years of experience, FSA and EA credentials, was a consistently high performer over his career, what would his expected title be at Aon within the core retirement actuarial business? Thanks in advance.

I genuinely believe that the world would be a better place if some people just got their ass beat once. That’s all it would take to bring them down to earth.
The amount of times I wish I could just smack some partners at my firm is too many. I grew up in the hood where disrespecting someone the way some of these partners do meant being prepared to throw down because that sort of thing just doesn’t fly. That environment makes you realize how easily someone could put you in your place if you act up. Real talk. Some of these white privileged partners need to experience that.
Sorry I'm late here but here's my two cents:
These out of pocket attitudes are alive, well, and in living color because they actually don't want to see people of color in this space where minorities actually have access to several hundreds of thousands of dollars in annual take home pay.
They'd prefer to have their little slice of American big law pie to themselves without having to think about how to be racially sensitive and hide all the bias they've been raised to think is right which justifies their self worth and view on why people of color are mysteriously not as visible in the legal field. "It's not from bias or racism - it is because of low LSAT scores, which are determinant of one's success in the first year of law school and bar passage rates...." 🙄🙄🙄
In the DMV area, successful PoC from an older generation learned to be tough and almost mean so that their coworkers would understand that they weren't their little black friend or 'the help' or someone to steal ideas from and not give their credit while stepping on their head to vy for promotion. And that meanness helped them to make it and not get booted out so easily by these people who have never had a 'life flash before their eyes' whooping that taught them how to keep their mouth and crazy behavior in check. If anything, I'm seeing more people that address black people in the craziest of ways as if it's acceptable. They don't talk to black people, rather they talk at them as if the black person is a walking commodity of racial tropes, instead of a person that likely has not much to do with the stereotypes being projected upon them.
My advice would be to treat these people like the no home training playground bullies that they are and ignore them ....with extreme prejudice. Take your money home and put your emotions elsewhere besides work. The moment they see that they can't get under your skin and make you feel unwelcome, unwanted, and undeserving, they begin to fix their sights elsewhere. Over the years, I've seen so many people of color leave firms because the mind games get to them. And that attrition negatively impacts the difference we are able to make in the legal field by simply being present, competent, and a living example of a professionally licensed minority (which many of these interesting personalities won't say is something that may have never encountered or even heard of growing up, so just seeing you be successful and in the same space as them or having the chance to do better than them makes their head spin).
If you need to go to Ghana to reset, go relax and have a nice bowl of waakye and shito. But come back and keep taking these people's money with a smile.
Think about how many people of color in this country have the chance to earn such an amount, the opportunity to save such an amount, and move so quickly towards financial freedom and potentially make a positive impact in their community through access to capital and potential business ventures.
I know the crazies can be exhausting, but trust me, the crazies are in-house, too. They tone it down a little because the business cares about the bottom line, so they don't have as sway as they did in a firm. The legal field (both in firms and in- house) is rife with people who are borderline sadistic and enjoy inflicting emotional damage on others without blinking.
But I've started to realize if I leave because of their madness, it's me who stops receiving the check while they stay and continue to collect checks and feel justified in their mistreatment of others by saying "they just couldn't cut it..."
Feel you 100%. But we need people of color/ minorities to tough it out and get to positions of influence so we can change this messed up system.
Well, white people are going to be the minority in this country by 2040 so hopefully demographic changes are coming soon in terms of the makeup of law firms and legal departments.
I’m actually feeling this 100%
To add on, I’ve been dreaming of teaching at the Shanti Bhavan boarding school in South India for impoverished and underprivileged children.
It’s a today feeling. This too shall pass. Call it a day today. Come back tomorrow.
My favorite partner describes it as seasons. We might currently be in a very difficult season, and the next day might still be difficult, but the season will eventually pass and become a new season.
Yes. Life is short. Don’t be miserable for anyone. Hope you find something better.
I feel you asf.
This is literally how I feel today. Sometimes I can’t tell if I’m being dramatic or making things up in my head but I just don’t know. Being a non white person in this field is not fucking fun and I don’t understand how people who claim to care about DEI don’t fully understand that.
They think DEI confirms equality and ignore equity. UPS workers make the same as me now. How. On. Earth?!
I feel you. I was just talking about this to my lawyer friends. I need to figure out how to transition out and still make money.
Please share
!!!!!
Not they need their arse whopped to start acting right 😩😩😩🤣. I’m in house and love it. Maybe that is the move for you. Mind you, some business folks don’t know how to act too, but I imagine culture wise it’s way better than firm life.

Open up you own shop lol
😭😭
There are environments that won’t make you feel this way. Find one, and keep your head up. There are too few of us here. Don’t let them push you out.
I’ve had these feelings at times as well. You are not alone. Yes, it is toxic and ignorant and small and you have the odds stacked against you. But, as I’ve progressed, I’ve noticed that I enjoy this job when I get (a) more independence and responsibility and (b) an opportunity to build (my practice area, my skill set, client relationships, etc.).
Don’t take one moment, day or season as indicative of your career prospects. But if you’re unhappy, do what you think the right decision is for you. Happy to talk further. And good luck.
