I got an offer from another company. Currently working in walmart. The main idea behind getting an offer is to ask for a salary rise. I was very much underpaid here. So I thought getting an offer will help increase my pay here in walmart by getting counter offer from them. But i am not sure if I discuss with my manager it will backfire me.Walmart

Hard skills are what get you hired. Soft skills are what get you promoted.
You can work hard and be smart and also advocate for yourself. It’s not mutually exclusive. And I’ve found that people who are good at self promotion but don’t have the chops to back it up (ie are not hard working or smart) are found out eventually. Extensive job hopping usually suggests this.
If you work hard and are smart, make sure people know it and don’t just assume they’re noticing. Most people aren’t because they’re too busy thinking about themselves.
Extensive job hopping does not suggest that.
Self advocation is a grand tactic. It should be done in more of a 1x1 environment, but it will lead to results in most cases.
Not always true but I dont disagree, have seen it more often than not.
This is the absolute truth. I have seen this in every place I've ever worked.
Do you all not have OKR -objectives and key results? You document your efforts and directly connect them to measurable impacts that are easily confirmed.
Objective- Increase revenues. example - Identified and closed leakage in billing process, enabling invoicing of past due accounts for 300k that were missed due to gap in process.
A list of accomplishments that includes I’m busy all the time attending meetings does not align to tangible stated objectives.
If you don’t have them, make them. It should expose the fluff employees.
It’s all of the above. Work hard. Work smart. Take risks. Be bold/confident. AND ensure exposure.
I began advocating for myself for a promotion in September 2021. I am a hard worker and often go above and beyond. I brought it up several times over the course of the next 8 months with reasons supporting my ask… and it finally happened. But I hard to learn to advocate for myself, not just be a hard worker and thinking it’s getting noticed.
As much as I hate that this is the case. THIS. IS. THE. CASE.
You have to be your own advocate! I made a commitment to be more visible in my tasks and have received a promotion and a raise within a year of starting my current job.
YUPPPP
And I’d do it again

I just prefer doing 1 on 1 with my manager every 2 weeks. (PS, i have been in companies where this 1 on 1s are mandatory, u and manager can decide frequency no later that once in 3 weeks.) And ask him/her if they have any feedback for me, also manager would tell me about my performance. This usually keeps u in check of how your contribution is looked at.
Thus no need to consciously show off or worry about hard work paying of or not!
Gotta be your own advocate
I don't see a problem with that. Maybe you should try it.
A lot of people just don't like the thought of moving to a new job. It's scary and stressful. They would rather trudge through a semi sucky job and hope for the best. I have never been able to stomach it. I will uplevel my skills asuch as I can and if it is not appreciated then there is another company that will.
In my case, it's people who sit with their bosses. Mine's in another country, and has been making it quite clear over the last year and a half that she doesn't think I'm worthy of advancement.
I left my job of 10 years because of this exact thing. The amount of money and magically found “new upward opportunities” was incredible (incredibly hilarious) after putting in my notice.
I still keep in touch with some of the old team. Others left shortly after me
Not all the time, I guess. As long as they really did the task, I don't see anything wrong with it.
