3rd year here - I have a big interview tomorrow for a firm I really want to be at.

Does anyone have some advice for good questions to ask? Career trajectory, what type of matters I can be expected to work on independently as well as part of a team? Firm resources etc.?

Thanks in advance

I always like asking how work flows through the office to gain an understanding of the structure of the firm and if I’m going to be working with specific people.

like

I’m in bankruptcy practice, so I ask the following:

1- What would someone at my level likely be doing if I joined the firm

2- In your opinion, what makes a successful mid-level associate in your group? (I’m mid-level)

3 - How do you see the bankruptcy practice at the firm growing or evolving going forward

4 - Putting yourself in my shoes, is there anything else that you think I should know at this point.

like

I agree with these, and would add that I also ask about why my interviewers joined and stayed at the firm. A caveat is that this isn’t appropriate if the interviewer is actually the founder of the firm.

Do some research into which industries the firm focus on and ask good questions that show your awareness, interest, and maybe even some knowledge about those industries

like

Imagine you already work there. Then think what questions you would want to know to understand the process for work and growth at the firm. As I’ve been interviewing people lately, I’ve noticed that I don’t like the fake questions, and sometimes it’s obvious. I like it when someone asks actual questions where it’s apparent that they want to know and understand the answer.

Thanks so much everyone!

How did it go?

Nice!! I think that’s a good sign for sure

Hey guys. I am currently working as an integrated marketing executive with an organisation. I have 4 months of experience and want to learn more. Any freelancing or side hustle projects that I can be part of?

Currently a Solutions Consultant at Pegasystems.

I am interviewing at and considering making a jump to
Oracle as a Specialist Solutions Consultant.

The reason for my move is currently at Pega SCs are treated more as AEs or Account Managers. The role at Oracle would be more of a true SC position. I also feel that Oracle will look BETTER on a resume and someone as young as me would have BETTER programs in place to train me and give me the foundation needed to be a successful SC.

Thoughts?

Should I stay it out and wait for TC to align or take the promotion and jump ship bc I will likely get paid more elsewhere given how recruiters/other companies eat up hiring recently promoted ppl from other firms?

So I work as an assistant manager at a restaurant for the past 9 months. I've worked in restaurants for the past 6 years science I was 16. Now I'm 22. I went to a trade school for media and film. I got a dream opportunity to work in the field making about the same or 10% more. I told myself the only reason I'd leave this company is for this type of job. Should I take the chance at this job and leave the restaurant that is on the rise and growing?

Recently lateraled as a public defender in HCOL area to ID in LCOL area for $$$. I’ve been at the job a little over a month. My concerns are that I’m getting very little guidance or mentorship, and I’m worried about not hitting billable hours (2000 requirement but I am just over 80 for the first month). I’ve been working at a rather prestigious midsized firm in a big city for almost a year and a half now. I have been having a lot of trouble picking up work from senior partners. We are required to bill at least 150 hours per month to meet our requirement. My months are typically only 110-130 hours. It seems like the senior partners already have their “go to” associate for things. Does anyone have any suggestions on how i can increase my workload? I reach out for work pretty much weekly.

When drafting a brief or other submissions for court or arbitration, do you use words such as clearly, erroneously, etc. to emphasize certain points? Our managing partner says that we should, but all of the writing guides for litigators that I've read repeats the mantra "show, don't tell" and explain that most judges dread such words.

I know that the politically correct thing to do here is to do whatever the managing partner wants me to do, but I just wanted to ask for other ppl's opinion.
