3rd yr associate, about to go on a trip (I’ll be out for 5 work days) and feeling insane guilt about it. The partners/supervisors act like they’re fine with it, but then say passive aggressive things like “wow that’s a longer trip than I’ve taken in years!” Also, my year end review is two days after I return, so dreading that as well.

Try not to have the b*stards get you down. You've earned this trip. Enjoy it!

5 days isn’t even that long. Enjoy it

If you’re being guilted about a vacation, lateral. That’s a toxic workplace. I told my primary partner that I was taking a week in Mexico, he said “have fun” and to leave my computer at home. (For context, I’m at an AmLaw50/V50 firm.)

likehelpful

Your vacation is a part of your compensation. Remember that. If your computer needs to be shut down and restarted from time to time in order to function then so do you! Enjoy your vacation!

CM-LC1 is 100% correct. If they’re discouraging you from using your vacation, they are essentially trying to take money out of your pocket.

I’m soooo done with the older generation’s mentality. It’s 5 days. It’s December. You deserve to enjoy.

Get out, that's toxic AF.

I took 2 weeks off and zero regrets. Your work fattens their pockets. They can suck it up.

My first job I worked four years and took two days off. My partner told me “must be nice. I haven’t taken a vacation in seven years”

My current job I had worked three months and took two days off (over the Fourth of July weekend) and my partner there said “is that enough time?”

Lateral. You should never be guilted in taking a well planned and calendared vacation

like

Taking 2 weeks off over Christmas to visit family in Australia. If work has a problem, f*** em. Life>work. It's just incredible that America values profits over one's health/well-being. Truly bizarre but I kind of get it.

like

I just took 2.5 weeks as a 3rd year. Enjoy yourself and just work hard before you leave and after you come back to keep as much stuff in line as possible.

like

Damn, one week is seriously not a big deal. How are these people sustaining themselves without even taking one week vacations from time to time? Insane. Don’t be like them; take your vacation.

like

They refuse to retire at my firm, and won't force even the most incompetent of their partners out. They all intend to die at their desk.

You’re right. Don’t go. Have no quality of life. Stay chained to your desk and billable hours. Ignore your mental health. It sounds like good natured ribbing of a young attorney. There is a reason the firm’s benefits include vacation time. Use it you twit!

funny

Sounds like a toxic work environment. Take your trip & enjoy the time off. DM me if you want to further discuss your current position as well as the lateral market.

like

Enjoy your trip.

I work for people that never vacation. They are toxic, don't know how to retire, and clearly have mental health issues. Take your vacation. Take every minute of it.

5 days is peanuts

Self-care prevails, don’t forget that you’re awesome!

Work life balance. Work hard, play hard. Enjoy your time off. You’ve earned it!

I wouldn’t want to work somewhere the partners haven’t taken a week off in years. I pretty much only take 10-day to 3 week vacations. I’m at an amlaw 75.

I just started a new job 2 months ago, benefits and PTO don’t start until 90 days in so I still have a month before I can take off any time, and today found out my company doesn’t offer paid maternity leave.
I’m really struggling handling the symptoms and maintaining my full time job. Thinking about looking for a part time job to have more time to myself through the pregnancy since I won’t be getting a paid leave anyways, but lost on where to start looking. Any recommendations?

I have a Q that I worry is going to make me sound like a jerk, but want some opinions. I do strength training 2x/wk with a trainer who was assigned to me at a gym where I bought a pack of sessions. I don’t really consider myself “his” client bc the relationship is managed by the gym… but lately he keeps saying like “I can’t wait to see what my clients give me for Christmas” and I find it super awkward. I pay $150 per session for these workouts (cont’d in comments)…

I’ve put myself up for L4 promo this cycle. Assuming I get it, what would be the best next steps to optimize for long-term growth/TC?

My understanding is that L5->L6 is extremely painful at
Google. It may be easier to leave for a handful of years and gain managerial experience before returning.

L4->L5 is less challenging; however, I’m under the impression I can do this quicker at another company (if I leave after being freshly promo’d) AND get higher TC.

Does anyone work at a firm where legal assistants don't do legal assistant things? For example, I have to do my scheduling and calendaring. I have to upload documents to our file management system. This morning, a name partners assistant didn't realize the name partner had a depo and didn't confirm it. This is how this firm as been for decades and it's incredibly frustrating to work this way. It's so hard to not stress over this daily.

It may seem obvious, but in my experience partners value trial experience over anything else, so get it however you can. For example, my firm will favor a former prosecutor who has seen the courtroom a lot but has no civil litigation experience (not even a depo) over a seasoned associate who has only second chaired cases with a partner but hasn’t tried a case. Even trying a case and losing gives you credibility at my firm because you still did it.
