A friend's mom (HR director) told him junior devs make $120K in a LCOL area. I'm in MCOL with 3 years of experience and just hit $90k (holding on to it for dear life). I think she's quoting the top of a salary band, not realistic entry-level pay. My concern is,, he's already adjusting his spending based on that number! If he lands one, great! but I haven't heard of any junior dev making that much in year one, especially in LCOL. Am I off base?

Maybe in super HCOL cities like NYC or San Francisco, otherwise junior devs don't make that kind of money, not even on the top end. Furthermore your friend doesn't sound very bright if he's spending money based on a salary he doesn't have yet. Not to mention the job market is abysmal so he may never find a job in tech, especially if he has little to no experience.

like

I've been telling him to not snub anything that is lower if given an opportunity since he could in theory use it to his advantage but mainly just encouraging him. If anything I know how nervous he's been sine graduating uni and might be in a bit of denial before applying for jobs. Kind of in that dream mode before reality hits 😅

like

My personal data point and anecdote:

I made 99K, 3 years into my career as a data scientist in a medium to high cost of living (DC suburbs). But that was in 2022. I don’t know what the junior dev pay scale is these days.

Either way he shouldn’t be spending based on hypotheticals of having a job he doesn’t have LOL

like

$120k sounds high if junior means enter level, right out of college. My son graduated from Cincinnati University with a computer science degree and got a job with the large, multi international firm he did his internships at (this is 3 years ago). They brought him in at $100k which, based on his convos with others at the same firm was on the higher end of the offer range. The market has only gotten tighter and more competitive so I cant imagine that number has gone up, if anything it's likely lower

like

That's been my thoughts. I just don't understand why his mom would tell him that. I know she's a director of HR but man seems so far from reality if they're being told that's the standard pay for entry

like

Ask your friend’s mom when she’s hiring.

Junior Devs that I’m seeing in Canada are between $60-80K.

like

I made 250k in one state, 170k in another, and now in the EU I am looking at 75k as a top end of my salary band. It is all relative to the COL, market value, and some companies are super cheap and do not believe in monetary retention tactics.
