About to join KPMG Lighthouse in a couple weeks. Received an email about a KPMG lakehouse on campus event in Orlando. I think it is supposed to be an orientation event. With Omicron looming and unvaxxed toddlers at home, I am wondering if I can say NO to this travel. Any KPMG folks who know if this is avoidable and not going to put me in bad light?

You can absolutely say no. Do what works for you.

No one is compelled to travel. Most travel is not happening now anyway. Lots of events have been cancelled due to the current omicron hysteria.

like

It’s optional, but the in person orientation at Lakehouse is awesome and worth your time. I’ve been to Lakehouse twice since September, once for new hire orientation, and it was great to start in person and meet a few people. The facility is top notch and vaccinations are required to attend and they test onsite.

likehelpful

You can request the virtual option but I would highly recommend you do the lake house trip. The food is amazing and you get to build friendships and network. I wish I could go!

like

They cancelled the Lakehouse orientation for January new hires. I could see this continuing since numbers for Covid aren’t changing much.

like

Do they still make people share rooms lol?

No, since Lakehouse was completed, all training has one person per room.

I am moving to Bangalore the next weekend, by 17th July. Seems there is a slight increase in Covid cases, would it be better to come now or should I ask my manager to allow me to come to office after some weeks once everything seems fine?

Serious question - is there a reverse FIRE strategy? I like the idea of saving and retiring early, but the one hiccup I see (and sorry if this is grim) is if you die earlier than expected. I’d be worried that I would minimize lifestyle and fun for retirement at 50 but I’d die at 49. How about a way to work 9 months out of the year and retire/travel/relax for 3 months? This way you guaranteed your dreams/etc. are fulfilled

Living in Van. Previously lived in Toronto. Obviously rent prices are high as is cost of living. Generally go out and spend more often living in a city. Boyfriend and I on good salary but not saving much due to the above. Before we move home to our own country, we’d love to spend a year close to Vancouver where rent is cheaper, temptation is less, to save. A commute to Vancouver 1-2 times a month needs to be possible (his job). That can be a flight if it’s not crazy. Thoughts? Recommendations?

Need advice. Have some credit card debt that I’ve been working to pay off. Have made progress but want to lower it quickly. We have dual income, with a house (~$300k in equity), 1 kid and 1 on the way. I’ve looked into debt consolidation via HELOC but also have ~$80k in vested equity in my company that I haven’t touched. Get equity refreshes every year. Would it be smarter to cash out $15k-$20k of that to pay debt vs. a HELOC at ~5% given that will still require mthly payments

I am truly tired of applying and waiting for their call back and reverts, Its like getting into depression slowly slowly.

Need a quick point of view all - today on a group call, I asked a new c level male exec if it was fine for me to provide a client with a piece of information we had been discussing on the call (this required his approval). He replied “you’re an adult so tell them what you want”. I was immediately livid and felt it was a totally weird, condescending response. I’m a senior female employee at the company and this guy has already had issues at the company with his tone, thoughts? Am I overreacting?
