Advice on Verizon internet speed packages? Options are 200 mbps, 400 mbps, or gigabit connection. 2 people living there, WFH, probably 4-7 devices connected, Netflix/Hulu watching, we’re not gamers

200 Mbps. Internet companies love to up-sell people on faster speeds because they know most people are ignorant on how it actually works. For your kind of usage, 200 Mbps is more than plenty – you won’t see a performance difference if you “upgraded” to 800 Mbps. My household has the same number of devices, streams, and has gaming – we’re at 100 Mbps with no problem.

Pro tip: Make sure your modem / modem’s software isn’t outdated, because oftentimes the Internet provider may be sending out 200 Mbps of speed but your box is only pushing out 50 Mbps to your WiFi network.

And of everything is on WiFi (if you’re in an apartment it probably is) then the bottleneck is your router. It’s like paying for a 10” water pipe to your home, but having a 3/4” water pipe entering your home. You can also change your video quality setting for Netflix so it’s not sending the highest quality. If you have a small TV or just streaming it in the background, you won’t notice the slightly decreased video quality.

Check the download and upload speed, that's what's important for 2-way video streaming.

I have gig speed

like

You probably don’t need anything close to gigabit speed. Most people in your position wouldn’t notice the difference between that and 200 mbps download (unless you often simultaneously stream 4K on multiple devices while downloading large files). The degradation most people with good connections notice is either due to server issues or someone else’s connection, not their own bandwidth constraints.

like

Appreciate it, I don’t think we require too much. Just watching Netflix/Hulu, working in excel and vpning to company networks

I get about 800mbps

like

Yes.

You will be fine with 200. Even if both of you are streaming multiple devices at the same time.

like

You’ll most likely be fine with 200.

I have 400 (degradation from WiFi to my room upstairs results in ~150 actual). We have a streaming device on our TV that’s almost always on, my work laptop, 2-4 phones (depending on the time of day), 2 iPads and another 2 laptops. Even with all of these devices on and running we don’t have issues.

So that being said I’d think 200 is fine for you unless you have a large house but even then I’d look into eero rather than pay for 400.

like

Thanks for the insight. It’s only a 2 bed apartment, so seems like we’d be fine with 200. And since there’s no contract these days with Verizon, seems like we can start with 200 and upgrade the following month if we notice slowness

I have 5 MBPS and it is sufficient to join video calls and stream video lol so I imagine 200 should serve you fine

I’m working at an insurance defense firm, trying to target my practice to L&E. I’m overworked and underpaid, but gaining valuable experience I hope to pivot toward an eventual in-house counsel position. I recently was offered an opportunity to lateral to a national firm for a significant pay increase (150% salary increase, much better benefits, hybrid WFH options). Problem-I would be shifting gears to Toxic Tort. I’m torn between my passion and the money. I’m a second year associate. WWYD?

My family and I have been looking to move to an island. My spouse works remote and can relocate at any time. My firm has an office on said island, but they don’t pay me enough to live there. I would have to ask for a raise and to be relocated. I love my firm and the Partners that I work for, but I’m thinking of applying to other places that offer a more livable salary for the location. Would you just talk to the Partners at your current firm or look elsewhere?

Really kind of shocking that management would bring in three pretty conservative speakers. I mean, we know where Rob and they stand, but I thought MYJourney was about building us up as leaders and finding what makes us happy and succeed, not just throwing politics right in our face. Just kind of makes me think the whole MYJourney program is a joke now.

Have any of your managers ask you to track every single hour you spent? It’s been pain of me for a long time. 1) sometimes I forget what exactly have I done for the day to reach 8. 2) some tasks take more time than managers’ expectation due to follow up, investigating, etc. and if you put more hours than then expected, they will then ask why.
:/ (this is not a request for me only, it’s required for the whole team)
