Stick to your interests, the money will follow.
Amazon, without a doubt. You'll be happy because it's more aligned and holding Amazon stock options will give you financial freedom in the long term
MC1 I’ve heard Amazon has absolutely no WLB, but I’m sure it varies by group.
Amazon! If you don’t do what you like, you won’t enjoy the extra money at hand either. Amazon may be a pay cut but will offer you much better work life balance too.
you can always come back to B4
I've heard terrible things about working for Amazon too, but it's such a huge company with their hands in so many things it could just be a vocal minority.
There’s no wlb at Amazon - I’d actually advice against it going against the current here.
Most people work 70-80 hour weeks. Work culture is not that good. Work is stressful ( but most work in consulting can be stressful at times). Only plus would be if you’re extremely passionate about amazon and think that is your place in future. Otherwise there might be cooler tech places with similar roles. I say because generalist role has more exit ops than amazon.
A1 big 4 doesn’t have stock options and 401k is not to the par with Amazon. Consider that in to account if your issue is just financial. Irrespective of that follow your interests.
WLB varies alot. When I exited I spoke with a bunch of folks that left my office for Amazon. You have to do your diligence on the group because their are bad ones but their are lots that are a step down from consulting. If you are looking for a flat 40 probably not the right place.
On comp, watch out. The vesting schedule sucks and they build in a 15% stock value appreciation into their rsu model. So if you got a $"100k" grant, $80k of it vests in yr 3-4 and is only worth $55k if the stock stays flat.
Worth much less than other companies offers that look similar on paper.
How can you possibly say “most people work 70-80 hours” (emphasis on most)? OP hasn’t even mentioned what group/function the offer is for. Context - SO works at Amazon and even within her function and sub-division (I’m probably using wrong terminology), hours vary tremendously. OP, if your end goal is financial freedom and happiness...you’re already well positioned to have financial freedom with your consultant resume bullet. I’d personally take the risk and test Amazon’s waters (sorry) to see if you truly love it...consulting will always be there. Worst case, it’s another strong resume bullet and your story becomes more interesting than ACN=>B4
If I regret leaving consulting, do I simply reach back out to HR if I want to come back?
Cut the cord and be free!!
L1 I’ve more than 30 friends and friends of friends @amazon. Yeah Seattle and yeah if you’re Indian you’re either in Microsoft or in amazon. So you know irrespective of the group they’re in even outside techie roles the wlb was never something they had. Of course exceptions are there everywhere and I’m not claiming 💯 accuracy. But I saw my friends work their asses off. Not a bad company but it’s gone to a size where it’ll be ages before you can make a million an year. Whereas op can do that by being in consulting.
Amazon. All the way. The stock upside is smaller but those from b school who went to Seattle 2 / 3 years ago have made a killing in the hundreds of thousands of dollars
Amazon, despite wlb and vesting because it’s like MBB for ops / ecommerce if that’s what you’re interested in
You answered your own question
@P2 - exactly what I’m worried about... The interest is there for this role but I don’t want to take a pay cut and lessen my exit oops by jumping too early. But then again, this role would allow me to build some deep knowledge in this area vs. consulting
@SM1, thank you! Thankfully the group I interviewed for is definitely on the less intense side. But yeah the vesting schedule worries me a little
Think about this like a consultant. WLB has to be investigated for the specific role so the drivers that we can discuss given the available information are comp and trajectory/growth/brand name.
On comp, there is a real risk. Amazon weighs its comp package more heavily toward stock than most. They also have a very unfavorable vesting schedule and valuation of their stock (for the employees). Amazon's market cap is $900 B today, for the equity to be worth what they are saying on paper Amazon has to reach $1.6 Trillion market cap in 4 years without significant dilution due to acquisitions. That would be .... Impressive. And that would be just to get to break even, no upside. If they dont, your comp will be significantly lower than stated.
Amazon is one of the FAANG so there is no question that it is a great name to have on your resume ... But they employee more people than the others so the cache is a little less. Talking to my friends that work there gives me every reason to believe that the skill growth is as high or higher than consulting in many positions. But if you are going and it ends up just being a resume bullet point after 1-3 yrs, you take a big comp hit due to the vesting schedule.
Disagree with what SM is saying. Very easy to look up specific vesting schedule online. Why would a company like this suggest a 15% stock value appreciation model? In general when you get equity at any tech firm you’ll know the #stocks and when those will vest, you can build your own estimate of what they’ll be worth.
