How long have you been there? If not long, you’re in a tough spot; you need to build some rapport/reputation. Are you the only associate?
When I started at my small firm, I also got 10 days, in person every day, but the next year it went to 15 PTO. So if that’s not laid out, you could use that to open a conversation.
And while how you use your PTO is none of their business, you’ll probably want to have a basis for your ask other than you need more. And be armed with showing you’ll get your work done and meet hours regardless.
After two years I think you should absolutely be getting an increase in PTO. Everywhere I’ve ever worked gave bumps every year up to a max.
Also just curious as far as the remote work goes, if you’re sick and stay home are you expected to work? That’s always my starting point - if I can work from home when I’m sick haven’t I shown I can work from home under normal circumstances??!??
Also my sense is that this amount of PTO is very low in general, but might not be low for comparable small firms? Please chime in if you have better or same polciy
Small firm. 20 days pto after 5 years.
Are you hitting or exceeding your billable hours goals? I’ve found that most firms don’t care how much time off you take as long as your cases are taken care of and you’re exceeding your billable goals. I would make sure you are doing that first. Then it becomes a very reasonable request.
Agree with AA1. I firmly believe they shouldn’t be nickel and diming PTO when you work nights, weekends, etc. if you’ve shown you will get the work done when it needs to be done, that should support having more flexibility in both PTO and remote work.
15 attorney firm.. unlimited pto as long as you will meet hour requirement
