I was in your exact position a few years ago.... I found it difficult to get a sales management role without having formal experience on my cv with external applications..... so i had to find ways to start to show my skills/willingness/ability as a direct contributor until a time when current management had enough confidence in me to have people management responsibility a lot of this was proactive including
making personal time to coach/help new hires e.g. shadowing calls, helping to do practice meetings, let them demonstrate the tech back to me
paying additional attention to all detail in my job eg. ensuring no questions could be asked about my own work quality right down to crm updates, planning and house keeping
volunteering for projects/assisting where i could....making sure i was at all volunteer days etc
asking my line manager what i could do to support them...what would they like to delegate to me/what could i be proactive on e.g. weekly team reports etc
Earning the trust to present the team stats to management when line manager on vacation
Being 100% behind all management decisions and showing enthusiasm (remember they are choosing someone to who will back them in all instances)
this was about 15 month process including being overlooked and an external manager came in.... I nevertheless continued doing all the above and this went in my favour when the next role came up they said "you had earned it".....I also got a pay rise then.
Dont be shy to ask for coaching/personal development to your line manager.

If you’re open to it, go for BDR/SDR manager role before being an AE manager. It’s easier and you’ll get management experience.
