@ EY1, consulting was something I fell into! I still love it, but think I’d want to be closer to the impact - whether that’s through teaching or practicing medicine, both of which were big considerations of mine in college.
Realistically, I’ll probably end up doing an MBA...but I often wonder if I should just veer “off path” and take the plunge
EY1 and B&C1 - I was a chemical engineering major + premed. In all cases, I knew I wanted to take a gap year because I was burned the fuck out in undergrad and, during interviews, consulting won me over with its flashy lifestyle (heh, I know right?).
Anyways, that was 5 years ago. Somehow, life kinda just happened. I was too busy traveling for work and for leisure to slow down and decide if I was in the right career. I spent the first 3 years in another industry, but my last 2 years in consulting have been in healthcare.
First, those 2 years reminded me of what I had always loved about the healthcare field and what I don’t like about consulting.
Second, I have a fiancée who was insightful enough to see my reaction to different things in medicine and consulting and who one day point blank asked me, "If money and time were not a concern, what do you want to do?" I didn't think and responded medicine. We were out on a walk and we cut if in half and straight home to see what I needed to do to get into medical school.
Third, in an attempt to verify that medicine was what I hoped for, I called a friend and shadowed him. During that experience, I saw things I felt were missing in the practice of consulting that I wanted to have in my life. It was the one of many experiences I had that helped make me sure that the career jump was the correct decision.
There is a lot more there so if you are interested, we can take it offline for more details or if you have specific questions I'd be happy to answer those as well.
BS and MS in CompSci here. Seriously considering an MS or doctorate in Aerospace Engineering. I'm a recovering military aviator and still a huge aviation and space nerd. I want to do more in that area.
Congrats D6 - last stretch! I have comps in August - fingers crossed I get through so I can finally get started on my dissertation 😅
Thanks SC1. this last stretch has been the hardest by far. Had to rewrite my lit review completely
Looking hard at PhD in strategy and innovation
I was accepted to meds but backed out 2 years ago right before white coat ceremony. Still think about it every day and am seriously considering reapplying.
Also super interested in machine learning / data science. Was always a statistics nerd in school, but recently I've been really putting the hours in to self-teach python, deep learning, and a lot of foundational math/CS stuff. Have had some thoughts about getting a degree to make it more legitimate, but have made a lot of progress just on my own, and wonder whether I can make up for lack of degree with a strong portfolio and project experience...
I've done some basic kaggle (incl a lot of computer vision / deep learning stuff motivated by the fast.ai course), and won internal competitions at ACN (super basic stuff, titanic survival). Competed in another internal hackathon and led a small team to build a recommendation engine with R for learning recommendations...
I've been working a bit on the spotify playlist competition and want to make a blog post out of that, also some things I've been doing with meetup API data. I also love teaching and have helped a number of analysts in my group get introduced to DS stuff, so have planned out a couple posts that would explain concepts to people still learning...
I've also inserted python and automation into most of my projects for the past year, including lots of web scraping, working with APIs, lots of data munging and viz... totally self directed since I'm in strategy and the only technical person in my group
Yeah, I'd say you probably don't need a degree. :) I'd hire you.

PhD in computer science. Thinking about it
Currently working on a doc and planning to move into academia within 2-3 years.
Bain 1 and Accenture1 how long have you been in consulting?
Would like to get a master's (or MBA) in organizational behavior. Would rather do the MS to save money and time, but my BF thinks I should get the MBA because it'll make me more marketable.
Anyone have any advice on this?
