Does anyone have family members who constantly demand money because they feel like you’re rich now because you’re a lawyer? Joining a big firm next week as fully remote lateral and flying out to home office for orientation. The schedule has me in office until 4:15. I’ve already been told I won’t have any actual work. Depending on how many people are there and how it feels, I was planning to stay an hour extra but should I hang around the office until later? First time visiting this city so it’d be great to take in some sights too (although that’s not a priority of course).

PSA - We are headed into a self-imposed economic slow down. Now is not the time to lateral but if you do, I would make sure you are at a recession-proof practice or firm. The top law firms will be okay (they always are) but if you are part of a larger group of associates with no work, you are likely to be axed. Latham did it in the 2008 and 2011 and it will happen again. If you are an associate or really anyone but a rainmaker, you are expendable.

Has anyone ever mass applied to jobs with the sole requirement being minimum compensation of $500k

Saw an article about the chilling effect that the Big Law salary raises are having on in house hiring since associates cannot bear to take the pay cut. Do we believe this? Of course if an in house role offers less than a first year salary it’s a tough pill to swallow, but what if the role offers in the mid-200s for a substantially better WLB? Thoughts??
