You should ask a Doctor... you don’t want to be depriving your child of important nutrients it needs to grow and develop....
Just be 100% sure that you are covering your child’s nutritional needs. It is very tricky to get all your nutrients on vegan diets, and you can cause permanent development issues for your child if you are not careful.
How does your wife feel about vaccines?
Whatever you decide, make sure it's you and your wife deciding. Leave extended family out of this. Not their call. It's hard enough making these sorts of decisions (and this won't be the last) when it's two parties, let alone more.
This is a decision between you and your wife. The only other relevant factors is what your paediatrician advises. Bear in mind that just because something is possible (a healthy vegetarian diet for a baby), other factors may mean this isn't being realized and it's important to be aware of any risks.
Personally, I'd raise my child with a normal omnivorous diet to give them choices (being on a long term vegetarian diet reduces your ability to process meat) and let them make the decision for themselves.
This is a bit snarky, but when you raise a kid vegan, they have a strong chance of growing up without all the nutrients they need and a 100% chance of growing up telling everyone around them 24/7 how vegan they are and how it's better than everyone else's way of life.
So true. But if his parent works at BCG they’ll probably grow up and be the CEO of McDonald’s just to piss you off
PS getting a baby/toddler to eat at all can be hard. Your wife's plan to go vegan will make it harder. Only you two can tell if that's worth it for you, but don't kid yourselves into thinking it won't add to the considerable effort of feeding the kid.
Actually it was around our ability to move from hunter gatherers to farmers/herders. Tools, etc.
There are much better carnivores out there
Me: vegetarian and ok with anything as long as nutrition is covered.
Wife: very strong preference for veganism.
Wife's family: ok with anything.
My family: very strong preference for vegetarianism. Insisting that dairy is key is healthy child development.
Help - I can see a storm brewing.
Your family needs to respect your boundaries. There is zero need for dairy post nursing
Totally thought this was going to be carnivore vs vegan...
We found milk to be an easy way to feed our kid at night and in the morning. Not sure if ease of some foods effects the decision
Your kid will eat what’s given to them. If they know cake, cookies and French fries. They won’t eat broccoli. My toddlers favorite food is beans and rice. Veganism makes things harder, but can be done. Just ensure your kid gets complete proteins and all the necessary nutrition.
Funny enough we’re doing the opposite for the same objective as CIO1.
Our kid is being raised vegetarian like I was. I didn’t have any meat until I chose to eat it in my teens. It’s been hard to go back to my vegetarian ways after I’ve had the taste.
Culture plays a role where grandparents, for us, have a huge say because they spend the bulk of the day with kids. They are a very key stakeholder that need to be on board with our plan and we’ve had to compromise with them.
Dont
The rise of humans was centered around their ability to cook and eat animal protein and the effect it had on their neural development. If your wife is breast feeding and only source of protein is beans or tofu, then the child is at risk for higher levels of estrogen.
