Any tips or tricks for litigator wanting to transition to transactional tax? Enrolled in UF Tax LLM program (start this fall) and will complete while working full time at a midsize firm. Plan to network with my firm’s tax and international trade group to get some practical experience. Ultimately not sure if I’d try to leave my firm after LLM.

I have a friend who, after getting his LL.M., and spent a year in tax, was snapped up by the DOJ Tax group. He loved his time there. Something to consider also, but comp might not be where you want to be.

That’s a great point and I would love that on the criminal side. At this point my pipe dream is to remain at a firm and transition to a transactionally-focused practice, but I’ve also considered trying to get in with the IRS LB&I

Networking is always one of the best options and if the firm lets you do some side work with the transactional group even better. Another possibility is to do a halfway stop to get into a tax dedicated group by joining a tax controversy group where your litigation skills would be very useful while handling audits (particularly post chevron).

Good luck!!

Depends on the firm, most that I’ve seen don’t delineate between the two and the same attorney helping to structure does the controversy work but I’m sure in big law they have a specialist just for controversy.

Janhit mein jaari. Folks, while retaining, don't fall for onsite trap which they'll try to lure you with. One of our mates has learnt this the hard way. Go ahead with with your job switch, don't fall for this.

Got a 30% salary bump, via an offer for Senior Consultant S&O from Deloitte. Currently underpaid at EY Advisory. I'm MBA and this year is my promotion year at EY for Manager. What to do? Get demoted and move to D? Or counter at EY? Even if EY matches my salary, and promote me to Manager, I will be an EY Manager with a Deloitte SC salary, and probably won't be able to go to D in the future. What do you think? I have built up a good relationship with my Partner and SMs at EY though.

Hello everyone! This is my first time posting since joining this platform. I’m interested in connecting with someone who is open to HR mentoring. I’ve been in HR now for about six years and have never had a mentor. I’ve been relying mostly on SHRM and other people in the company for feedback. Even if it’s for feedback, I would really appreciate it. Thank you!
