I tell my manager and I have also told teammates when the situation arises. Once, it’s saved my bacon. What I thought was an orange juice was a Mamosa.
Just yesterday I told my manager and my team manager that I needed a break. I’m going through some heavy duty therapy right now and it’s really messing with my head and I just needed a break. The telltale sign of course was the fact a project which should have taken me three days has taken me three weeks and it’s not even finished yet. Were they supportive? Damn straight! When I told them I was only taking a week off they asked if it would be enough? That’s supportive.
When I got sober last year I immediately told my close co-workers in honest detail. It was a way to keep me accountable. Within a few months I opened up pretty transparently to everyone. Now I will openly talk and joke about it to whoever. No shame. It’s been a really helpful part of my sobriety honestly.
We are a BIG drinking office. Full bar and little restriction on how it’s used. Agency sponsored shots in the morning of holidays and plenty of day drinking. I was pretty nervous about how I would deal with the regular day to day drinking culture. Everyone has been hella cool and supportive. A few of the people who are on the heavier drinking side have asked some questions about “what it’s like” in a classic “I know I have a problem but am in denial” way - I don’t preach to them and am just honest.
It’s been a pleasant surprise
Yes, I always inevitably tell my managers/team about my sobriety to avoid awkward situations where I keep getting offered booze since my agency has a heavy drinking culture. I’ve never had a negative experience telling people at work. In fact, everyone has been very supportive and understanding.

Feel like I’ve gotten *worse* at my job since I got sober...
