Be a nice person, you were in that position once.
I think the best action here is just to be honest. Tell him/her that you prefer to chat on the phone. Or if you don’t respectfully decline. Nbd.
Opt for a 15-20 min phone call instead
If you think like an owner, adding one very capable person doubles your contribution to the firm. Thinking like an owner is key to becoming one.
You’re kidding, right? Every single piece of advice I’ve got as an intern is reach out to people for advice. I’ve reached out to everyone at my company, got maybe 3 responses over email and 15 on linked and got 0. This feels shallow, we just want help
Never.. I always try to give it back objectively . Someone took time and chance on me and it’s my turn to give it back
Yeah that’s the kind of hustle that got me into the firm, literally coffee chat with a partner. Would go far out of my way to make time if someone reached out to me, frankly would prioritize it. Karma is real!
I don’t feel annoyed at all because that was once me and it’s now time to pay it forward, send the elevator back down as someone else said here. What I usually do however is tell them meeting in person is challenging (when it is - sometimes it isn’t) and suggest phone instead and do most of these on a Thursday afternoon somewhere between the time I leave the client site and when I get home. “Nothing is impossible to those that will try”
Interesting to hear the entitled points here. I get TONS of these requests. Some are through similar school, some just random requests. My take has always been you don’t have to. If you can make it work great. I always start with a call (and don’t feel bad writing back and saying really busy could a call work). And if I just don’t have time, I try to at least write back and say that. To be honest, I’m not sure that any of the chats help the candidates as much as they like. The recruiting cycle doesn’t generally care that I had a good 25 minute talk with them (esp if they bomb the case). I’d say in all the ppl I’ve spoken with pre-application maybe only 5% get the job. I feel good about those but I don’t beat myself up for those I say ‘no’ to.
Does talking to you help them get past the resume screen?
Like you’re not taking people’s time posting things here!!
I counter their request with a suggestion of smoothies
Vitality Bowl is preferred, but Jamba Juice will work in a pinch
lol, your important. have a call if you can't meet. I am always down to help an ambitious/talented person. if they've got the stuff, I will always help.
I always advise students to ask for a phone call when they’re trying to network.
One issue I have with the consultants on my team is they get too invested in the recruiting process. We don’t have the time for in-depth conversations with all these candidates. I had one guy who met with someone and then he wanted me to meet her before he introduced her to a partner. I had to tell him we don’t have time for that - she can apply and we’ll value his opinion, but that’s what the hiring cycle is for
This is a great article related to this. Do what you can and re-route to someone else if you can’t help for whatever reason. It does feel good to help people. https://medium.com/thrive-global/the-gift-we-love-to-receive-but-forget-to-give-3375224d5919
OP sounds like a fun guy, must work at Deloitte...
I run a side business and run the board of a nonprofit, so I’m there with you on limited time.
However, I love doing this!! It’s such a breath of fresh air to meet earlier-in-career individuals, get to know them and hopefully give them a nugget or two as they go along their journey. Yes, sometimes I don’t have time or I’m traveling and I’ll say, hey let’s do a phone call and that works too. I’ve also developed great relationships with some and when they are in NYC they’ll hit me up.
At the end of the day, however, it’s not for everyone, you should focus your energy on what’s most valuable and enriching for you. This is valuable and gives ME energy but I imagine that can’t be the case for 100% of people.
I feel you. I also try to be very nice but if I know it’s not a good fit (e.g. looked at resume, checked with people in my network, already had a bad interaction at a networking event) , I definitely decline. I get annoyed when they can’t take the hint to that decline... seems to be happening a lot to me. Getting a very strong sense of entitlement from some candidates as of late..,
I feel surprised by the number of random requests after my last job change. I want to help but it would be so nice if they could explain why they thought I was the right person. there last few I got were basically asking for referrals and I had zero connections or context!
Sounds like you kind of suck
Load balancing is an essential skill. Im sure you can figure it out
you sound entitled.
My particular vertical has been majorly disrupted this last quarter (more than 1k layoffs in last three weeks). What I’m learning is some miss physical presence. Who am I to not provide that? Think of when you are benched. And outside of that, your “upside” if you have NO EQ... they will remember who did and didn’t when they resurface at an adjacent client.
I'm just here for the ratio.
But, also, firm development is a huge part of the job, and we are in a talent business. Recruiting, retaining, and developing talent are core consulting business functions.
