My former firm did this and color coded us by red yellow green who was not on track, close and on track. Very normal and not toxic environment
We get a report with our hours, the average, and three highest/lowest each month. No names attached.
In general, people overestimate the average hours of their peers. My firm regularly averages about 1700-1800 billable
My very small firm emails a chart at the end of every month with everyone's hours
My V50 does this. And rings a bell and says “shame”
Question (because I’m seeing a theme here):
Are billable hour requirements generally set *a little bit too high* on purpose to keep associates pumping out as many hours as possible while still keeping them afraid of losing their jobs for not meeting those hours?
I am definitely thinking it’s a tool to get optimal productivity. Candidly I’m happy with my pay and a bonus is just a nice add on, and don’t really ever hear of anyone in the firm getting badgered over hours unless the hours are really bad. However, it definitely lines up with the thought of it being a tool to give lower bonuses.
My former small firm didn’t do this, but they didn’t have controls on their software so I could look up anyone’s hours. My current large (AmLaw 100) firm does not do this
Mid market firm. Every month we get a report of all associates hours. I like it but I know others don’t.
Negative
I also could’ve wrote this. I work at a regional firm with an 1,800 minimum. Almost no one hit the 1,800 and I know because we get monthly spreadsheets with everyone’s name and hours.
Sent you a DM
Partners get this monthly at my medium sized firm and most of us and associates never meet target for hours
Ours doesn’t circulate a report very often, but you can see anyone else’s hours in our billing software (going back yearsss).
This is funny - I could have wrote this post. My firm does this. 1900 hour requirement, everyone's hours shown, and red marks showing if under budget. It also includes a ton of financial information about realized rate of each associate and partner. There are a few years of records that everyone can review. I would agree that less than 25 percent of associates hit the hourly requirement here, which is brutal because that means barely anyone receives year end bonuses. I can't tell if this practice is toxic or not, but certain people are definitely toxic and management is fine with it. Hoping to lateral at some point soon (not really fair to chase a mythical year end bonus).
My AmLaw 100 does this. Very spicy!
A firm I worked for in the past did it. I hated it.
At my first firm (big law) they shared everyone’s hours on the internal website we shared. At my current firm it’s super confidential and hush hush. So weird.
