Never true. A polite no always ok. Plus the recruiter will leave anyway
W+K: of course, doesn’t account for Human (Resources) error
Before you decline, tell them that your making x at your current job and it'd need to be worth it for you to leave your current position. If they really want you they'll make a better offer
I've had to say no for salary reasons. The recruiter was very upfront with me during the whole process, and I repaid the favor. I liked the team, but also didn't love the vibe I got from the agency as a whole (kept that part to myself).
End of the day, we left it on good terms. She's since left that agency for another and still hits me up every once in a while to see what I'm up to and if I'm looking. We're all just people with jobs and most of us get that.
Been reading a negotiations book “never split the difference” and thought a few tactics might be relevant here...
Diffuse the negative. At the opening of the call, acknowledge all the bad things they might want to think about you. “You’re going to be annoyed that I am making your job harder... you’re going to wish I didn’t call... you think I wasted your time...”
Say no without saying no. “I’m sorry I can’t make this work... I want to work with X person or X client, and I wish it had the growth opportunity that I’m looking for right now. I wish so badly everything could line up perfectly”
Use open ended questions that start with what or how. “How can we keep in touch... what’s the best way to stay on your radar if X types of roles open up in the future... what’s the best way to keep you posted on the skills and opportunities I’m taking on in case a role opens up in the future..."
I’ve intentionally tanked interviews before. That way you burn a bridge and don’t get the job at the same time. I really need to switch up my strategy.
Nothing wrong with valuing yourself highly. It’s a business and everyone knows that.
just make sure you do it politely, as W&K says above, and clearly. I'd practice it outloud before speaking to them.
the risk is that you are perceived to have used them to negotiate a raise where you are. that's unlikely to blackball you, but if may put some noses out of joint
Yes, just be gentle. They obviously invest time and energy into putting an offer out.
