Lived in San Diego for almost 2 years before moving to Chicago…
I would need to make a good ~20% more in San Diego to have the same lifestyle. Depending on your income, it could be even higher.
Myself, along with many who I’ve known, would never move back to Cali without some crazy pay raise. It just costs way too much and you get nothing in return.
OP, it’s not one thing… It’s literally everything. Add ~20% more to the cost of everything from Chicago to SD and that’s about what it will be…
Taxes kill out there. Keeping my salary the same, I literally had about $350 per paycheck more in my pocket moving from SD to Chi and I wasn’t making anywhere close to what I make now.
The costs are crazy out there. Almost everyone that I know who moved there has since left after a few years. The costs just keep going up too. It’s not slowing down.

A1, which one do you like better? Any specific reason for the move? Always curious to hear why people leave SoCal, and especially SD.

+1 as McK2.
I wouldn’t even move to Chicago (or out of SD) for a better job opportunity. #1 deciding factor for me is no snow and I can choose to get out of my house without giving much thought on how to wrap myself up outside.
Pre-covid I was flying to San Diego from Chicago weekly for a project. Definitely seemed more expensive. That said, I also had the corporate card so maybe I wasn’t making any effort to find some reasonable options

Side note for everyone, literally no one actually from CA calls it “Cali” or “SoCal”.
Most just refer to it as California.
Trying to fit in will just make you stick out even more

@D3 hey man it’s ok if ur actually not from SoCal
I think a lot of people leave simply because of cost of living.
This… There is a reason they call SD a melting pot and someone who was born and raised there that continues to live there is a rarity. It’s known as a transient city as well due to the large military bases and people constantly coming in and out. I think many realize it’s not worth the cost and leave. Yeah, the weather is nice. But it’s better in Hawaii with better beaches, ocean you can get it, surfing, fishing, etc.

Housing prices just went up by ~30-50% in the last 2 years because it has great weather and a lot more people want to WFH in this great city.
