Got messaged by a C3 . ai recruiter. Read that wlb is bad and that the interview process is absurdly long, but the Glassdoor reviews are 4.2 and can't find actual hours worked posted by anyone. How's the culture really? I'd be aiming for DS consulting, something more functional but with DS/ML concepts as my differentiator.
C3.ai, Inc.
Thought this was interesting. Across 160 teams of researchers, just about all failed to make good life outcome predictions on things like GPA, evictions, layoffs, and others. Data followed 4.5k families across 15 years, with 13k features (varied over time). Haven't looked at it directly yet, but will be turning the docs and data inside out... In the meantime, authors claim this as showing the limits of ML. Oh, and it's published in PNAS, so you know there's some big publication energy there.

I would wager to say that the conditional odds of someone knowing basic probability given that they are an analytics director is relatively high. If you don’t know Bayes rule you most likely shouldn’t be an analytics director
I never said I don’t know probabilities lol. This getting played out. Anyways I hear you all, I would not be asking any of my hires probability questions. We have better methods of assessing great candidates not academic questions
If you don’t remember probability then you probably can’t do analytics?
What was the question?
Dunno... When I was in industry and I had to interview consultants that I was told have do my modeling for me, one of the first things I asked the cadre of consultants at my door was: what's a good Durbin-Watson? When the guy in charge couldn't answer, and the only one who could was the glasses-wearing nerd in the back, there was an instant field promotion to engagement lead. I didn't even ask what it was or why it was important, just if someone could read the damn model stats. The guy that was field promoted 100% was the only one in the room room aside from the three internal stats guys that could answer that question. He also explained to his team why it was important.
I'm not saying that managing engagements is always like this, but sooner or later you are going to meet some folks on the client side that know their shit and can poke holes through you and make your firm look bad if you can't instantly up your game. Reminder: not all clients working with you want to work with you.
Sounds like a BS job branded as "analytics". At a Director level you should be leading the teams to an outcome not answering probability questions.
Probably they are looking for someone who can coach as part of leading the team.
Then I guess the question makes a lot more sense then. Clients will often not understand how models work, being able to break it down for the being able to translate from code, statistics, and human language is core to that kind of role.
Simple example - Naïve Bayes uses probability!
You or your team wouldn't happen to be on the search for a Data Analyst, would you? I went and did a refresh on Bayes' theorem.😆
If the pay is right, do a bit of studying. Unlikely, the job contains any of that.
Makes sense, thanks!
What was the question?
How much wood would a woodchuck chuck if a woodchuck could chuck wood?
How senior is director in this company?
I HATE when this happens. The old out of context ‘quiz’. You should reply with your own question and see if they can answer.
I know my stats but honestly don’t keep every metric in my head.
They should be asking you about work you’ve done and how you approach it.
If you have stats in your background you and are in a work problem you can solve it in about 10 minutes by refreshing your memory. To ask you to do so off the top of your head is bullshit IMO
