Are interviews really a "two-way street"? Because most of the time it does not feel that way. You are the one being evaluated at every step, while they get a pass because you are the one under scrutiny regardless of whether you or the recruiter initiated the contact.
If you do treat it as a two-way street, what do you pay attention to that others might miss?

Usually they're a dead end street

like

Somewhat true

It’s up to you to make it a two way street, by defining the standards you want the organisation, or the recruiter, to achieve.

Punctuality and preparation certainly work both ways.

Simple things - did they show up on time, have they read your CV, have they tried to see where you fit well, and have they thought about where they have doubts?

If they don’t care about you now, then that’s not likely to change.

like

That’s fair

Sure - you can remove yourself from candidacy if you don’t feel the role is a fit for you. I’ve requested more time with people to get more information about a role and the actual day-to-day working environment before accepting a role. But if a company doesn’t leave time for questions or doesn’t let you talk to people who you’d actually be working with regularly, that’s also a red flag.

like

I see okay

It's not a two-way street because you need them more than they need you. It's more like a one way street and a bike lane.

like

Not necessarily

For you average hire, definitely more of a one way street. For a senior executive hire or rockstar, then yeah maybe the street gets a lane in the opposite direction.

They should be a 2-way street. The focus is normally on you (the candidate) but true Hiring managers give you a chance to ask questions about the role, team, and company. You should pay attention on the questions they ask for clues of why they are asking them. You should have questions that would give you clues of their management style and the team’s strengths. What key areas are they looking to improve.

A "two way street" is not a reference to the power dynamic: clearly the company/prospective employer has more power and control. It's a reference to the fact that you are both evaluating each other, and as a candidate, you can be attentive to signals that may cause you to take yourself out of consideration, decline an offer, etc. But given the economy and job market, it's gotten harder for individuals to be very strict on things, we are going to end up yielding on more vs. when the job market is leaning in the favor of the individual.

Definitely. I look for the vibe of the interviewer, do they seem like someone I’d want to be around and do they genuinely seem happy with their job.

What happens if someone cannot crack client interview?will he not get project and will be asked to leave?

I currently work at a large research institution and am in the process of getting retroactively reclassified to a new title (Long story but my PI is cheap and routinely pays ppl the bare minimum so now the Union is helping me w/ a retro reclass.) Reclass can take 2 - 6 months to process. Meanwhile, I am interviewing for industry job. If I get an industry job, what do I do if my reclass isn’t processed yet? I want the title and the money owed which may be about $15000- 20000.

We’re starting to interview for my copywriter partner this week, but I don’t have any creative leadership above me (I’m also the only creative with agency experience at the company) so I’m nervous about being the only one looking at prospective partners.

Any tips for good questions to ask to feel out who is the best fit? I’ve worked with great and not so great writers in the past and it wasn’t always clear which would end up being the not so great based on their books.

Hello Fishs,

I have given 3 rounds of interview for the position of SE- B8 , i.e. Lead SE. Now in salary discussion round i asked HR for a CTC between a range of 31-34L. But they told me max they can give is 29.5L. I still did not accepted the initial offer from HR, it is going again one more round for salary negotiation after HR confirms the bracket from Business. I know Natwest dont negotiate once you accepted the offer. What CTC can i expect from Natwest for Lead SE.

Big tech or consulting? Which do you prefer as a career and why? I realize this is really general. I’m interviewing with Accenture and Amazon and the opportunities and career trajectory or so wildly different. This would be my entrance into consulting and concerned that if I wait too long, consulting would be a pay cut without prior consulting experience. It’s already looking like a financially lateral move but high potential. Vs tech is a big jump financially but different career direction.

I recently saw a job opening at a company that I really love, and would like to apply. The recruiter has posted it on her Linkedin several times, each time with multiple hashtags about diversity. I am straight off the Mayflower white. Does applying look super tone-deaf? Is this an unofficial way of stating that they’re only considering non-white individuals for the role?

I am in a tech IC position. One of friends switched to FAANG by converting the profile to consultant profile. The friend who might have less tech knowledge than me is now in FAANG and earning more.
