I’d be too afraid I’d inadvertently end up raising a Texan.
Hey
Yes. Austin is a great town to raise kids. And it’s a liberal oasis in Tx. I am from the northeast but lived there for 7 years. It’s a great city. Tons of outdoors and nature activities, very active city. If my spouse didn’t hate hot weather so much, I’d move back in a second.
Is it a good idea for you? I can’t say. :)
Moving that far for a job better be more than just a job. Opportunity of a lifetime? You want cheaper living? Looking for more space ? A lot of factors but moving a kid has. Lot of repercussion so it out to be. Whole package kind of thing. That said, I heard Austin is rad
For me the problem would be the heat. I’ve lived in a state that’s got except 2-3 months/year before and found it unbearable. Been back in the north for a few years now and I appreciate fall, spring, and even the days of cold and ice more than ever.
I’m super liberal and moved south a few years ago to the burbs of Dallas, surrounded by conservatives...it’s not nearly as bad as stereotypes would lead you to believe! You’ll definitely find like-minded people, especially in Austin, which is wayyyyyy more hippie than any other city in TX. Austin is an awesome town and a great place to raise a family - you just have to go into it open-minded. (School/neighborhood-wise, probably aim for the area just north and northwest of downtown - the further north you get toward Round Rock, the less blue you’ll see...) Texans are TEXANS before anything else - that state pride is probably the weirdest thing for us transplants, but also kinda cool. Definitely visit and see for yourself! Good luck!!
Lol no - like MoPac/2222.
It’s a great place, but whether or not you might like a place is highly subjective. What’s appealing to you about Austin? That might help us be more specific in our responses.
I’ve been offered a job in Austin. I just don’t know if I can handle being in Texas
It’s weird to go from a liberal area, where your views are kind of the default...like you can just say stuff and know that most people either agree with you or at least are familiar or tolerant of those views...to one where you are the minority.
Also, the guns. As a parent I always asked if there were guns, dogs or pools at houses my kid visited. Pools and dogs had follow up questions (is pool secure, will an adult be present, etc and kid is super afraid of dogs so we had to make sure people understood that and would put the dog away when we arrived). Guns would have been a no. Just not a risk I’d take if I didn’t know the parents super well and see the gun safe etc. luckily I never got a yes on that, because where i live it’s exceedingly rare. How would you, OP, feel about knowing your kid has play dates where guns are?
And before the gun peeps go nuts on me, I’m not interested in the debate of gun safety: My child, my decision and a risk I was not willing to take. Your mileage may vary and I don’t really care what you do or how you interpret the issue in your family.
Long time NYer here. Known a bunch of people who relocated to Austin, tend to think it’s a cool town but end up moving back saying “it’s still Texas.”
No
I mean, are you likely to encounter a republican? Yes. Are they going to try to convert you? Not likely. And your chances decrease significantly the more central you live. there’s more to life in Austin than politics, but if that’s your main driver, then it may not be the place for you.
