EY1, it means staff do both. There's not enough work in audit or tax to be purely one or the other, but it sounds like OP does more audit
Really depends on the place. Apply for senior and if they don't think you can handle it you'll be offered a staff position
What does audit leaning senior even mean?
PwC makes you stay at staff for three years and they'd hire you as an experienced staff
Probably better for your career to come in as experienced rather than senior. Big 4 seniors have probably covered a lot more than smaller firms and you will be thrown in to a senior role on your first big 4 assignment. If you can't deliver, it will be noticed quick and reputation suffers.
If you don't have a formal discipline, you're likely to get staff 2
They'll bring you in as an experienced associate regardless. Then if you're good enough, you'll get promoted after 1 season. It's better at PwC that way, because when you make manager you get the full bonus, which is discounted if you come in as a senior. (Thinking long-term of course)
I've found that in some ways audit experience on smaller clients better prepares you to understand the full lifecycle of an audit from planning to fieldwork to reporting. Often on large clients, someone with equivalent experience may have seen fewer different sections and aspects of the audit. Play that up in your interviews and ask for senior. Be confident and take on that challenge. You'll need that attitude to succeed and thrive in the big 4 environment anyway.

Do you have public experience or work on client with assets of hundreds of millions? If not, experienced senior is probably where you're going to end up.
EY1-I'm with a smaller firm. We don't have defined audit or tax tracks. Nor have I worked on clients the size that big 4 has. Hence my question and no need for the snotty remarks. Thanks everyone else for the feedback!
With only 3 years experience you would most likely be bumped down to an experienced staff at EY, but probably better for you so you're not overwhelmed. A year won't make a difference long term
Senior!!!!!! I went from a local firm to a big four and the seniors at the local firm know a lot more than the seniors at Big four! Never let them hire you in at a discounted price! Believe in yourself! Do not let them set you back a year!
