Sorry to hear that you had to face this. I’ve had a similar experience at ZS, not this extreme though. I wouldn’t say it’s because you are white/non-white. It’s an Indian manager trait to treat their subordinates rough. But using terms like “I will get your ticket to India” is an HR violation and should be reported. ZS has many people who worked through this similar culture of no respect for lower level employees (it is rampant in ZS India). Needless to say I longer work there.
I’m sorey you are having a bad experience. You should report him to the HR imo!
Rising Star
Fellow indian as well. All the indian managers I've had have been exactly the way you've described. Along with the verbal abuse and terrible demands there is 0 time put into team development.
Sounds like ZS. Had similar experience (no verbal abuse though) and if you complain about the long hours, it will reflect in your reviews. I even started getting meeting requests for weekends and was once asked to cancel my Christmas holiday plan for a client project already in ruins. Wasted 6 7 years of my life there.
Do raise a voice against it! No one has the right to belittle you and make you question your self worth , visa or no visa. Criticism has to be objective and if you feel sure that it is unfair- stand up for yourself rightfully so. Hope it gets better for you OP
Strongly advise you to report it our OMP and HR partner! All the best. This kind of behavior is unacceptable.
Yeah this is unacceptable behavior. It is sadly not uncommon among some foreign managers.
I would try to collect some evidence if you can, or see if you can find some witnesses to this behavior. Always helpful when reporting to HR and the OMP.
Agreed that this is unacceptable behavior and should be reported. I am truly saddened to hear about this.
If another data point helps:
I, as an Indian* who transferred to a ZS US office many years ago and worked with many Indian* colleagues and Indian* leaders in the firm, have not come across this behavior and I'd encourage you to not sweep this under the rug.
* First generation immigrant (so having a history of growing up, studying and working in India)
Beyond reporting the incident, know that there are many great leaders and teams in the firm, and you should feel empowered to evolve into a new team/space that you'd like to work with before you start looking at the door and rebuilding your network at a new company. That last part is with the assumption that the only thing making you feel like moving is the interaction with your immediate manager and not a general dislike of consulting / ZS work.
Report him!!!
Following up: Were you able to report this to HR ? Did you receive support from partners/colleagues? Are you still in the same team? Hope you're well!
