Never pay for an interview
As a Partner who does a number of interviews I’d say the willingness to travel is definitely a sign of your hunger/desire to get the job. I have no problems with Skype interviews, but if you are equally qualified as another candidate in every way (rare situation I know), I’d give a little kudos to the candidate that came in person. I think it depends on the company too, if they are big into sustainability then it may be a mistake to travel. Personally (and this might just be me), I’d love a candidate to reach out to me pre-interview to clarify arrangements and get my perspective (you’d want to run that by the recruiter first to see if it’s allowed, you’d probably need to go through the recruiter). Think it shows organization, planning skills and a level of maturity.
It is a bit of a disadvantage being virtual, but if the organization really wanted you they would pay for the flight... I say stick with Skype.
Continued: I would have to pay for travel myself. Interviews are not for a consulting company but for a startup accelerator with a low acceptance rate
Don’t go.
I think you'd be at a disadvantage with traditional orgs, because the interviewer might not be as comfortable with Skype and therefore not have as pleasant of an experience, which hurts there recognition. Since it's a startup, you'll probably good. Interviewer is probably use to video conferences and gets not spending money when they don't have to.
How interested are you guys n the job? Companies that don't pay for travel will not take the candidate seriously... It seems that your interview is not going through the formal hiring process . I would do the first interview on Skype
I’ve done Skype interviews (4+ hours) for a job 12 hours away and got it.
LOL at people who say don’t pay for an interview. My friend traveled on his dime for an informal coffee chat with a MCK person and an office visit at one of their smaller offices. It definitely helped him be more authentic when he answered an interview question on why he wanted to join this office. He got a job
Coffee chat =/= interview. Also that question was probably non-evaluative
I’m concerned that they don’t even have the funds to fund proper interviews for candidates they are eager to hire
