Tbh the only time I hear of places with no requirements, ppl are either paranoid and over-billing or paranoid and totally slacking/next to get cut. Don’t really have personal experience, but, if in such a circumstance, I’d likely still work towards hitting ~1900. Falling below 1800 without indication that it’s acceptable would likely drive me crazy. I’d prefer the numbers. This is similar to places with no limitation on PTO.
There’s always an expectation, and it’s usually market (approx. 1900-2000). If you’re getting paid market salaries and bonuses, then they expect you to bill market hours to cover your market salaries, bonuses and overhead (health care, legal assistants, etc). Despite being archaic, the law firm business model is rather simple.

The flexibility of being at that lower range and not worrying seems better than the hard 2000 cutoff so I still appreciate that
I’m a third year at a firm with no billable requirement, there’s no unwritten expectation that I know of. I billed about 2500 my first year and 2400 my second but am expecting this year to be less because of a slow period in my practice area (restructuring).
Would rather not share my firm publicly but feel free to DM!
My firm technically has no minimums, which was touted when I was a summer, but first week of training we were told that the general benchmark is 1950-2150 hours. Not unreasonable and I'm glad it was made clear, but I was pretty irritated that this very clear guideline was not shared with the summers. Felt like they were hiding the ball.

Yeah that’s dumb- might as well be clear from the get go
Subtract about 20% from all these numbers mate. Former big law here and obviously busy weeks and months are busy but I get the impression there’s a little bit of a “who’s got the biggest” going on here.

I did 1900 year 1 and 2100 last year. It was brought up in my review that last year was a lot and I said yes and I plan to never do it again. Jan and Feb have me on pace for a 1200,year lol (I know it will likely pick up).
I guess you’re not gonna name the firm
2400 last year
2500 M&A mid level. During a normal climate it’s liberating not obsessing over hours but it’s todays market you’re gonna hit 2000+ no matter what
1850. Market pay.

Awesome- what’s the firm?
Some firms that don’t do billable hours have a utilization rate for whatever you’re billing instead of a fixed hours “requirement”

Got it thanks!
