Bill for the full day always. If you’re at work, and assigned to a project, it’s billable. Things like waiting for feedback, meetings, even lunch while you’re thinking about it are all billable. If you have 1 project, bill for 8 hours on that job. If you have two or more, split them up to equal 8 per day. Trust me, they are looking for you to fill those 8 hours on your timesheet more than anything else.
Create extra options, and spend lots of time doing research on other approaches/look at ad databases/ look at things that are inspirational... that could fill 8 hours easy.
Agreed with CD1, you shouldn’t have to be super literal about it. I worked at one agency that you had to be added to job codes by specific team members, and the account teams would go back to you and argue your hours down weekly, and I had a similar anxiety and it was really miserable. I’ve worked in a lot of shops and that is the only one that I had an experience under the microscope like that. If you do have a lot of downtime during the day, you could certainly ask for more work and it seems like you have.
Don’t stress! You’re not a robot and no one expects you to work every minute of the 8 hours. And agree with the CDs here that you can just buff up the hours.
When I worked on a client for 1.5 hours, that would be 2 hours. If I made a 10-minute call to the client and need to wait for feedback, that would be an hour on my timesheet. When something takes half a day but took me an hour to finish... yup, that would be 4 hours on the timesheet.
If you’re working, bill it. If you are staring out the window, bill it. If you think of something in the shower, bill it. The creative process doesn’t follow a punchcard.
Breathe. F*cking breathe. You’re fine. It makes sense that you’re worried about job security. You’re feeling vulnerable. That’s a long time to be jobless, and it messes with your head and confidence. It’s fine. Buff up your hours. You don’t have to be so finite about this process.
Put down 8 hours.
Then what if the accounts team tries to get you to reduce your hours or you have to justify each and every hour to them?
