At my university the consulting program is up and coming. Now I am part of consulting club leadership and want to know:
What do you wish your consulting club did for you to land a high profile consulting gig and be successful in it?

At my club we did real projects which was a huge advantage when I finally did start working in consulting. I was actually shocked at how much better I was presenting, making slides, and understanding project format. That being said, if you’re from a non-target school, being competent is no guarantee of anything. You will have to hustle a bit for referrals etc and what non target schools often lack is early casing infrastructure that established feeder schools have. So I guess focus on getting your foot in the door and kill your case interviews .

like

You need to get companies on your campus. This can be through micro projects or fostering relationships to build out a case book. End of the day getting firms on campus is what matters. Outside of that your club members need to be prepped with good materials and curriculum.

Success on the job is w.e. because a good education and attitude can get you up to speed on anything they throw at you.

like

Seconding that you need companies on your campus. In addition to micro cases and practice and all that, so much of landing positions these days is about your network. Interacting with the companies that will be hiring upon graduation is clutch.

Which offer should I accept? Currently staff 2 at big 4 in Tax with CPA license. I want to leave tax ASAP. Both are public companies +1B in revenue and same salary. Offer 1 - staff revenue accountant so reading contracts, speaking with the sales team and legal team, a lot of work at the end of the months to close books and reconcile transactions to make sure we are ASC 606 compliant. This track usually leads to director of revenue. Offer 2 - internal audit staff so SOX and compliance projects.

I’ve been practicing in traditional labor for about two years now (although about a decade of labor relations experience) but I’m trying to break into employee benefits law. Unfortunately I’m not being given much experience in benefits as I’m pretty typecast as a labor atty. Any advice on how I can go about getting employee benefit experience? My long term goal is to have benefits be my main area of practice.
