It’s 100% upgrade. Who you foolin
But the preftige!
Better brand.
None of the risk BS.
Can always come back.
I assume you’re in this gig for the long term. If so, where do you want to be when you’re 50? Answer that question and you’re 85% of the way to your answer. The other 15% is overriding short term considerations
You didn’t exactly answer the question. But what you said sounds like a short term consideration. So how much do you value that relative to the potential end state? Btw, I don’t even mean to suggest that on your current path your age-50 state is better or worse with/without the switch. Maybe you think your capabilities are more aligned with Big 4 than BCG, only you can decide
BCG is a better brand, more interesting projects, and probably even more dedicated teams than any Big 4. But don’t fool yourself, being a Principal is hard work at BCG and you won’t be handed any favors. So only say yes if you’re prepared to dedicate most of your time to the job and push for Partner. Otherwise stay cushy where you’re at.
I would slightly amend what BCG1 said: BCG is the more “premium” brand, and is more expensive which dictates a different type of engagements than many Big 4 — more difficult, high value, and mission critical.
Also, I don’t think it’s fair to say BCG teams are more dedicated. I think BCG (and others) have a different talent proposition that is more generous in some ways and therefore attracts people with more drive and devotion, creativity, and intelligence.
And I don’t think it is fair to paint the life of a Big 4 SM or Partner as “cushy."
OP, you’ll find you’ll be evaluated on different metrics. So I wouldn’t focus on sales or utilization numbers in your exploration of BCG. Consider whether it’s an organization whose values you share, people you get along with, and work you enjoy.
Problem is I lose my spot in the Partner pipe and I’m probably 12-24 months out.
Tough one...what would you enjoy doing? Start there maybe.. partnership is not guaranteed.
Partner pipe is So guaranteed these days...
I do see myself in consulting for the long haul. I could do without the independence burden, but don’t have much aspiration to start the process over towards equity ownership.
I honestly have a difficult time assessing where I want to be at 50. I’m 32 now. My interests and motivators will likely be vastly different at that point in my life.
What work set do you think most closely aligns with your skills? At which firm will your abilities be most valued? Are you more motivated by money or fulfillment? Will any of these answers materially change over the next 20 years / as your personal and family situation changes?
Dammmmm OP you’re 32 and almost a partner wow
I know lots of people that are ‘almost Partner ‘. Many never get there
There’s a senior partner at KPMG who’s 34
Don’t underestimate how much independence screws you over. Clients don’t care as much about it as you’d think they do. BCG is a great brand and if you can build a group to do the work, you’ll be way less hamstrung in the long run.
BCG1- What are the sales and managed revenue targets for BCG Principal?
$35m in sales and 80% utilized this year with global delivery. Agree - not cushy!
