Visa sponsorship can be really tough, coming from someone who had to deal with this (10 years in the US). If this was me I’d transfer intra company to US, get greencard sponsored, then MBA or bypass MBA with lateral to MBB (I have friend who went B4 to MBB). Given the job market I personally wouldn’t take the gamble
If you’re planning on staying in consulting and b school is a pathway to MBB I would take it. SEA -> US transfer to tech consulting will pigeonhole you. Source: from SEA, have seen both tech consulting and MBB in US
If I get MBB itd be 2-3 years at max and Id like to jump ship to tech or sth
Take the job, skip b-school. Not worth the opportunity cost for you.
This is coming from someone with an M7 MBA
Really tough market for internationals at the moment - would really pause and think if it’s worth the gamble.
You should go to B School. B School will enable you to pivot from tech consulting to proper MBB or T2 management consulting. You’re young, and this is the time to take risks for growth, and for your background, an M7 MBA barely qualifies as a risk. An M7 MBA will be life changing for someone in tech consulting and you should definitely go get it. You will be able to find a consulting firm to sponsor you. The visa stress is overblown when it comes to consulting recruiting. I’m a current M7 b school student and my international classmates who are going for consulting are doing just fine. A B4 tech consulting background with M7 will be a shoe in at an MBB or T2 as long as you prepare correctly for interviews. Even if you don’t get consulting, all of the other jobs available to you will be better career paths
If you’re really feeling that risk averse, see if you can leverage your M7 acceptance internally for your Big 4’s strategy consulting arm and get some form of early lock in and sponsorship and then go to b school with that as insurance. Do not take that job transfer over business school. You’ll be stuck a tech consultant for the rest of your life. Go to business school and aim higher
I would defer B-school admit by a year. Take the transfer with your current Big4, look for MBB roles (level down should be fine) and then go to bschool in 1-2 years. This will give you a feeler for the market. If it is tough, continue at Big 4, else go to bschool
I am the one who took a transfer within internally to a backend role and focused on getting the green card. If you’re not an Indian/Chinese - I would recommend take the transfer, get the green card and do whatever you want. Green card is a way bigger unlock than any MBA. The only time I’d think about doing MBA first if you come from the above nationalities (like me). Then you would feel very stuck in the process of GC.
