Lots juul rips, aggressively high hamptons bar tabs, and spending most of the time in the former telling everyone how cool I am and how my dad owns half of LA 😂😂
^ Dallas. Guarantee it.
55-65 for me. Good mix of local (and home 4 weeknights for dinner) and travel (rarely 3 night). Weekends sacred except under extreme circumstances. 70-75 hour spikes not unheard of but those weeks usually known in advance. Even then, weekends are sacred.
~60-65 hours a week is the norm in my office, but can quickly spike to ~80 in due diligences.
I started out in banking and my bad weeks at Bain (hours-wise) are on the light-ish side of what banking was
BCG - hours hit 60 once you know what you're doing. International travel is optional, policy dictates you're likely staying a min of two weeks at a time. Weekends protected and super easy to keep relationships.
One other nuance to add: hours can be heavier when you’re on the cusp of promotions due to extras coming in. Eg:
ASC - EM: JEMing studies
EM - AP: splitting time + practice dev
AP - Partner: split time as AP on multiple studies / taking up CD roles + client dev + practice dev
That said trajectory is totally worth it
In my office it’s impossible to do anything during the week, and a lot of people have weekend work, the people posting here seem more unrealistic for my office
And nobody talks about utilization. It’s not a thing. Neither is getting hosed at bonus time
Works well for me. I work under 60 hours inclusive of travel (unless there are delays) almost every week. Probably was 70s earlier in career but it’s manageable now
Agree with B1 - most weeks are 55-65 depending on the case for junior staff. Diligences usually 60-70, with those with 70 being on the bad end (meaning office leadership will do their best to mitigate and help out).
I feel like I’m able to do things outside of work - whether that’s volunteering or hanging out with bf/friends - but tend to limit that to weekends since the workweek can be unpredictable even on a local case.
At Bain, we staff out of home office (teams are those from your office). Travel is usually 2-3 days a week but there will always be 4-day travel. Very rarely international, usually within the region. Sustainability is a firm priority so folks do their best to allow for flexibility beyond just hours worked.
55 hrs avg as a consultant. As a new PL have been in 60-65 range (learning curve). Expect to come back down but probably settle closer to 60 as the expectations are higher than as a C.
Have certainly had “big push” weeks, but partners are super aware and it’s common to build in more “chill” into the following week.
I’ve heard it’s 80-90 hours every week, and if you get staffed internationally you could be away from home weeks at a time.
The hours do seem a bit higher than Big 4 but it seems like everyone still lives a fairly normal life on the weekends.
Agree with others in that weekends are protected at my office - it’s culturally frowned upon to even ask for weekend work unless it’s mission critical and absolutely known in advance.
Agree that utilization isn’t discussed, which is great, as it lets you focus on the work itself. If North America firmwide utilization is high, then consulting staff get more % in profit sharing, which is also great - and makes working the hours a bit easier 😊
Based on FB sounds like they work same if not more compared to big 4
Buddy of mine flew from Chicago to Geneva every. Single. Week. For 6 months
