Can anyone share an experience with me of when you had too much experience but were able to break into a different role? I have 4 years of experience at Big 4, and I want out of fund accounting but people keep telling me I’ll have too much experience after 5 years. I’m willing to not be paid more or even less, but everyone makes it seem like I’ll be hopeless after 5 years. I want to try different types of accounting/analyst. Any help is appreciated.

I think when people say you’ll have too much experience they mean you will have to take a pay cut.

like

That’s dramatic and untrue in my opinion but I can’t speak from experience, just seems highly illogical

like

Just sounds like a dramatic way of explaining what getting pigeonholed means. For example, a company is not going to hire a tax manager as their FP&A manager, or a fund accounting manager as their corp dev manager.

The managers in these scenarios would have to take a step down in both pay and title. Or they would need to hope for an internal transfer to their desired group where they retain their pay/title.

I would look for what role you want next and think about what it will take to get there. A combination of networking and upskilling can go a long way. I wouldn't say you're doomed and pigeonholed, but it's definitely time to look around if you want a change.

I’m a designer in the planning/landscape architecture dept. of a CE firm. Extremely frustrated that after 4+ years and multiple asks, I’m not getting the in-field construction experience I’ve asked for. I know that my designs could be better if I could see how things are actually built but I get slapped in the face with “I need you in the office designing/drafting” or “there’s no budget to have you go out” and then sends an intern to inspect instead. I’m 5 yrs out of college. Any advice?

How do you successfully transfer B4 skills/experience to industry (how do you find the right fit?), and how do you continue to learn and build your skills so that you’re still marketable and could boomerang back if it doesn’t work out in a few years? Am I asking too much?
