Can you keep your MBB (management consultancy ) job after having kids or who have toddlers? Especially for women? How do you manage 9-9 work hours?

People I know at MBB plan on exiting before having kids. Others are prepared to spend significant amounts on childcare. Just depends on your approach or preference

like

It’s definitely hard, and also depends on the support and arrangements in place with your partner. The firms try to do what they can (flex working, extended parental leave), but that said I know of just one PL in 1.5 years who has taken maternity leave.

Then again, we do have female MDPs with school aged kids so obviously they found a way to manage that earlier on in their careers here

Hey Pfizer - it is possible, but you will definitely end up sacrificing some time with the kiddos. There are options for internal rotations, taking time off, etc. that can help you through the early formative years (where travel and long hours are hardest) without sacrificing a path to partner.

like

Most people either have a stay-at-home spouse, or a nanny/au pair. If your regular schedule is over 50 hours a week, you just can't be present for your kids as much as you might want to be. It's a trade-off that a lot of senior professionals- lawyers, doctors, bankers - have to make.

like

It's also a crap bargain to have to make, by the way. No one ever wished they spent more time on a strategy roadmap when they look back on their lives.

like

I’m a dad but definitely doable. I don’t start until 9 (might be different if I weren’t in my group) so I spend all that time with kids in the morning and then I almost always sign off at 5 until 7 and then get back on… honestly 4 hours or so a day with the wife and kids is pretty good..

like

No I just live close to the office and leave everyday at 5 or a little earlier … Highly prioritize commute time compared to more space … 10 mins by bike to get in

Nanny

like

My friends with higher powered careers and kids all have nanny’s or au pairs.

like

Nanny. Work early, stop 6-8 pm to dinner and bath snd such, work 8-10. Also need a partner who can do the random stuff/days off/sick days.
But, also, weekends are about the kids! Full attention. Any work happens Sunday night.

like

It is not easy. Having a structured routine and blocking the calendar for kids’ bed time helps , but there will always be a partner or client who has to give you their $0.02.

Stick to your boundaries.

However I know that there is scope of pushing the offer till 36. Any inputs on getting the offer to desired figure would be helpful.
