CLA Tax Senior Salary:

Hello fam,
I am interviewing with mid-size firms like RSM, CLA & Moss Adams for Texas or Arizona locations. I am wondering how much salary should i expect?
( I have CPA but no tax experience)

If you have no experience, you'll struggle coming in as a tax senior. Anyway, CLA is definitely the lowest pay of the bunch.

Probably aim for 75k.

You will not get a job as a tax senior without experience. Aim lower, start at the bottom

Wow if those firms are interviewing for a tax senior position they sound desperate. No offense but to succeed you need a strong background or at least some background in tax and project management. Sure you can probably handle the second part but assuming you are hired if your associates have more tax knowledge than you that’s a huge flag in my book cause you are supposed to review their work. I’d suggest campus recruiting or coming in as a “experienced” associate. Cause otherwise you will literally not be in a good position to succeed. Best of luck though!

I am an m&a junior at a firm that is generally considered a lifestyle firm (pay below market but target hours are lower unless pushing for partner). Over the pandemic period, we have had so many senior associates and paralegals leave that there is no one to ask questions to and I’m doing paralegal work (we are all in survival mode). I’m not convinced the partners in my team (who are aware of the problem but cannot convince management) can recruit people to replace given we pay below market.

Am I understanding utilization rate correctly? It’s chargeable time over total time? Charged 40 hours and had 10 hours non-charge so my utilization is 80%? If so, wouldn’t it benefit me to understate non-charge hours so my utilization is higher since they only really care about chargeable time anyways? Charge 40 hours still but only put 5 hours non-charge for utilization to be 89% instead of 80%? Or am I misunderstanding how utilization works?
