Consultants who left for tech firms like Google, apple, amazon, microsoft, can you share your experience? Mainly around the differences in work or culture and pros/cons reality vs expectations? To me tech firms are my ideal exit so want to know more in reality or if it's a grass is greener thing. Thank you!!! 💖

I think the biggest thing for me is that each role has a high level business problem, and you're given the latitude on how to tackle it. You will own more of the end to end problem solving. You'll need to not only get buy in on the approach, but you'll also get to see if it's actually a good solution because you own the outcome.

Another difference is you ended up building deeper trusted relationships. If you are on a good team, there are plenty of challenges to solve - and require long periods of time to reach the ultimate goals.

Comp is pretty nice too 😊

Totally agree with this - peer reviews is what got me promoted

Its not so much the color of the grass. More like you realize consulting is playing on concrete barefoot and now are playing on grass.

I straight up am putting in 35 hour weeks versus 65, bonuses that exceed targets versus being halved, and work on more compelling work with non sociopaths. Oh and also $500k+ in stock vested if you stay 4-5 years.

I left for a tech unicorn.

Differences in work: teams are lean and there are many projects in the backlog, which leads to (1) high impact work that directly affects the P&L but also (2) ruthless prioritization. My work is much more technical—even though I’m in biz I do a fair amount of data scientist and data engineer work. I also have a lot more autonomy. I tackle broad questions/problems myself with some guidance from my manager when I get stuck, but most of the time I’m on my own to execute.

Differences in culture: WLB is way better. I don’t work over 35-45 hours a week. Because we’re a tech firm, many of my colleagues have PhDs in math, statistics or CS—they are super smart and I love learning from them. People are happier because the pay is good and benefits are much better than your average firm (like free, good food for all meals).

Differences in expectations: similar to consulting, there is a high pressure to deliver and work as efficiently as possible. It can cause stress during working hours in busy weeks but as I said above, I rarely work over 45 hours a week.

like

Top down direction is given - leadership has goals and there’s high level project prioritization and planning at the VP/director level every quarter. This flows down to individual teams who set KPI targets and monitor them throughout the quarter and then assess efficacy/results in a retro. But at the individual level, there are multiple ways to hit those KPIs, which is where the individually driven projects/experimentation come in.

We have 2 review cycles a year, like most consulting firms. It involves manager and peer reviews. These decide promo/comp bumps. If you exceed expectations, you get a multiplier to your equity for the following year. Like 1.25-1.5x

I am in the final steps of the interview process for an in-house position. I mentioned to the recruiter that I had unvested equity I would be leaving on the table. She said the company would take this into account and make me whole. She later asked for proof of the equity in the form of my account statement and balance, which I provided. I have not yet received an offer. Is it typical for companies to ask for this documentation if they don't intend to make the candidate an offer?

Just got offered a job at a small biotech in London (UK). ~£45k plus bonus but only 1YR FTC and no equity.

Pretty sure it's a discovery role too.

I just finished my PhD at a very good uni with 3 years technician experience before that. BSc and MSc also at very good unis with good grades.

I think this offer is well below par, but curious to hear what you guys think/if you have any comparisons?

Thanks in advance :)

AWS vs Cloudflare BDR roles

AWS lowballed but I negotiated to match Cloudflare. Cloudflare offers more equity but AWS has a higher base.

I love Cloudflare. The people are great but it’s an engineering culture and the sales team isn’t as well shaped up and I can’t go for a promotion until at least 18 months of tenure. I am an investor in the company and think of them super highly. I’ve already got half a years SDR experience and AWS promotes quicker.

AWS has prestige but is it worth it?

Hey All,
I finished a third round interview, and HR contacted me that afternoon saying I had positive feedback across the board and they would contact me the next day regarding next steps. It’s been two days and they finally get back to me saying they haven’t been able to sync with the hiring manager but will keep me posted. Honestly I wish they would talk with the hiring manager and then let me know the decision instead of checking in. It’s messing with my emotions.

Just signed the outside employment form in KPMG onboarding system. I actually wanted to start dabbling in creative writing as a potentially monetizable hobby, but I'm guessing this may pose issues.

Definitely interested in the "exception from this policy may be requested if provision of non-professional services doesn't interfere with one's duties of causes conflict of interest" clause, though. Has anyone been able to get one of those before?
