Deloitte Folks: I’m applying to a position that requires the “up to 80% travel.” How does that work for you? What’s your typical week like? Don’t necessarily like being away from wife/family so much.

First flight out Monday morning and last flight back Thursday night

Up to 80% travel means Monday to Thursday, every week.

I travelled 80-100% of the time for eight years.

At times I loved it - I lived all over the world, got to have amazing experiences, fantastic dinners, and make brilliant friends out of my colleagues.

At other times I felt lonely, beleaguered in a hotel room next to a motorway on a godawful project with people I neither liked nor respected.

It varies, therefore, from project to project and team to team. It isn’t all terrible otherwise no one would do it for extended periods.

For me, I did it until I had a baby. I didn’t want to be away from my kid that much. In my 20s it made a tonne of sense, my SO was supportive (and liked the space of me being away as they are an introvert), and it accelerated my career. But I didn’t want to do to with a family. I grew up with my dad doing that kind of travel and I didn’t really know him until I was in my mid 20s. I don’t want the same for my kids.

likehelpful

I grew up with a dad that also did the 80%+ travel. He was more or less happy with it, and it seems to have been passed down to me as well (nature v nurture thoughts on this are interesting).

As his daughter, it was a bit hard, but it was all I ever knew, so it didn’t seem bad or strange to me, and those with a father who didn’t travel all the time seemed weird. Looking back, I wish it had been different and I wish I had seen him a bit more, not that I wish he hadn’t traveled at all, just less.

It also did put a toll on my Mother. I’m not sure how she would have managed it if she wasn’t a full time mom, and for a number of years we had live-in help which made a huge difference for the entire family.

I’m not saying not to do it, but realize that the family dynamic will definitely be different.

OP I will say that number sometimes includes local travel or extended travel. I’m Ex Deloitte. I was staffed on local projects where I traveled 30mins -2 hours from my house. I even was put on remote projects. However, that isn’t always typical and many times you don’t have that flexibility. I had projects where I traveled Sun - Friday because they were on the West and I’m East coast based. Though the typical is Mon - Thurs. I like traveling so it never bothered me in any of these situations. However, I know it bothers many people. You’ll only be able to know when you get there. If you want less travel look at the GPS practices as those are government and are usually local travel only.

likehelpful

80% travel typically means every week, M-Th at the client site. Fly out early Monday AM, leave the client site Th afternoon.

likehelpful

If you are already indicating that you don’t like being away from your fam, really ask yourself if this is the right role for you. The pace in private vs public sector is also very different.

likehelpful

Op but you work at a consulting firm now? Do you not travel regularly? Just curious, if we know what your current schedule is we might be able to give better comparative answers

like

80% travel doesn’t mean M-Th travel.

It means 80% of projects available for this position/group are FT travel. We define FT travel as M-Th.

helpful

OP if you are applying for a position that is DC based you’ll most likely be able to be local, if you want to. D has a lot of Fed contracts. However, GPS is also comprised of State & Local and Higher Ed (abbreviated SLHE and what I primarily do), a legacy commercial offering.

For the latter, it’s either M-F or M-Th travel respectively. Average hours for SLHE ~55/wk on client work alone; I think the earliest I’ve ever left client site is around 6, with the norm being around 8ish, unless it’s crunch time in which case it can be much later.

Feel free to DM me if you want to chat or want a referral 😊

Do you all like it? Have families?

Same as D2

Ugh I would do anything for a travel role. I’m single, in my 20s, have zero friends in the city, no social life, I have nothing holding me back and would love a travel role but have been local for 5 years 🙄

@D2 I wake up at 6 am and workout or do a class

That’s a great question... At Booz Allen, a large percentage of us (to include me), work on long-term engagements that can go on for 10+ years of the company continues to win that particular work. It’s actually quite hard to move around and see different things in the company locally or in other localities.

The shorter answer to your question is that I’ve only traveled 2-3 times in the last 3 or so years for a couple conferences. Everything else has been local on the client site. This tends to be the norm working in the federal space.

I just left consulting because of this. I’ve got two kids and for a few years it worked out-was staffed remotely for one project over a year, on a few locals for others. But there was always this constant fear I was going to be put on something where I would be gone every week. The first few times that happened, I did ok, especially if there was meaningful work to be done. But this past year I was put on a completely meaningless project where it was only about optics. I literally flew every week so I could be a live body in a chair the client could see. I decided I had had enough right then and moved to an actual job with routine. It’s such a relief now.

I’ve been offered a reporting consultant job for less than 60k and I bring 9+ years of experience to the role. They should be offering more. I don’t want to settle but I don’t want to miss an opportunity to move. Reporting consultants should start at $65k per recruiting sites. Any advice? How can I get HR/recruiters to offer more? TIA
