Never too late and lots of judges (mine included) prefer or strictly hire attorneys with experience versus those straight out of law school. I did a year of practice in Big Law, but I have co-clerks who did more.
My judge also prefers clerks with work experience.
I did the same and had no bites right when I graduated. Did 1 year at a small firm, 1 year at a mid-sized national firm, then hopped over to do a USMJ clerkship. DJs popped up all over the place after that -- pretty sure I had at least 10 invitations to interview. And like others have said, many judges prefer lawyers who have been in practice for a bit. One of the term clerks hired in my courthouse this year is almost 40. Everyone has their own path!
if you're willing to move anywhere and apply to literally everyone, you will get more than one!
Newly confirmed judges often prefer to bring on an initial set of clerks that have a few years of post law school experience.
I had a 2 year fellowship with an appellate boutique before I got my COA clerkship. Keep trying!
