Of course, we all have to take care of our mental health. If you have any problems, I recommend that you discuss it with your superior so that he/she can give you the information of the person in charge of taking care of the people in your job.
Of course, but in the past, these things did not happen, mental support was seen as a sign of weakness. I have been in the force for 29 years and I am a police captain, now we have mental support which is still somewhat frowned upon among the ranks. as it is rarely used.
We do have support for mental health, but I feel that it is not used properly because we have a limited number of people who come, if you do not force it, they do not attend.
If we have support for mental health in our department, it is something that really works perfectly, the quality of life and mental health in our department is at a level never expected.
Despite being a small police station in Wisconsin we have support for mental health, most of us are old-guard police but our captain basically forced us to go, and personally, I feel that he helped me a lot and continues to help me, years ago we lived through things strong and this helps to carry them better.
Good for you. “Despite being a small..” nope. Doesn’t matter where on the earth you work, cops and fire/EMS see the same stuff. The stuff society doesn’t want to see. They send us to clean up the messes and they are the exact same all over.
Mental health is a necessity in any job but for us, as police officers, it is totally necessary. In my police department, there is, but in my opinion, it is something that is needed in all police stations in the country.
Seeing people dead, cruelly murdered, seeing young people lose themselves in drugs, talking to people who have suffered abuse, witnessing scenes of violence, being forced to use force from physical to lethal force, all these things leave their mark on you, it is necessary that you let's have emotional support, mental health is something that can quickly take you out of the game.
Once. Over a decade in LE, had one single session after a particularly horrific call. EAP is always an option but it’s not really socialized as a positive thing.
