40 hours a week, no travel, and no weekend work. Pay is less than commercial, but the quality of life is addicting.
Exactly M1, how is government staff Aug marketable? I didn't become a consultant for work/life balance, I came to learn, make money, and supercharge my career. I'm in industry now and we are hiring and ex federal consultant resumes did not make it through screening.
They get paid less than commercial
Exit opportunities are limited
Not everyone sees business strategy roles as the end all be all. This assumption on fb that that's everyone's goal here and anyone not in those roles must have failed is kind of funny to me. Business strategy was never that interesting to me. I always thought national security strategy was much more fun so that's what I do. And I've never been in a staff aug role.
But yes, federal roles generally pay less but the work life balance absolutely makes that trade off worth it imo. What's the point of money if you don't have time to enjoy it? Besides, if you calculated our effective hourly wage I bet I make more than you.
Don't underestimate the power of a 40 hour work week and the impact it will have on your quality of life. I really, really enjoy my life.
BCG1, so you just automatically assume federal consultants aren't good enough based on no facts? There are many federal staff aug roles, yes, but there are also many federal consulting engagements that are very exciting and interesting.
I get it, the work might not be as exciting, but I don't really care anymore about United1k and SPG platinum...not at the cost of a normal life
It can be, BA3, depending on how much they lowballed you when you came in and what level you're at, but at a certain point it's not that big of a deal. If I'm at 110k now am I willing to almost double my weekly hours to get to 130k? Absolutely not.
I work on mostly local engagements as well with Deloitte OP
I am on the federal side and hours vary depending on the engagement. Pay is less than the private side and opportunities are limited, however the work life balance at least allows me to take my cycling and Bikram yoga classes.
A, I didn't assume anything, the head of strategy looked at their experience and said no chance. B, it has nothing to do with people not being good enough, government experience is simply not that relevant in the business world. And yes, I have plenty of government experience in both consulting and 10 years in the military.
BCG1, how were you able to land at a top tier firm after the military? I'm assuming you must've went to a top B-school in between?
Signed,
A curious former soldier
Good work life balance, but definitely not the same pay.
I don't think there's much of a salary difference tbh, but the work life balance makes it so compelling. I might consider it because I might do the unc online MBA program
10-20k difference at some levels
10-20k is A LOT, especially when you're at entry-level. That difference can make or break whether you can even cover rent in a city. I've had to live at home in the suburbs to make ends meet and to pay off student loans.
I'm LOLing at all my fellow boozers touting their work life balance. My guess is you're Cons and Sr. Cons...enjoy those 40 hour work weeks while they last, b/c they disappear once you make Lead Associate.
BA2, yes I agree with you. At the LA level I think it makes less sense to stay because you are less likely to have that work life balance. I know some who have done it but they don't make it easy for you
Super low-balled to the point where when I got to SC, I got a huge pay bump.
BA2, I did b school part time while on AD. I didn't go straight to BCG from the military, I did a couple of years in banking first. Send a burner if you want to talk further.
